About this work

Two young horses stand in a simple outdoor scene, heads down, grazing on short grass. The image is made with thin, scratchy lines on a soft gray background. It feels quiet and calm, like a moment paused in nature. This print was made using drypoint, a technique where the artist draws directly into a metal plate with a sharp tool. The lines hold ink and create soft, fuzzy marks when printed. Sintenis often drew animals this way, showing how well she understood their shapes and movements. She worked in Berlin in the early 1900s, a time when few women were taken seriously as artists. You can see this work in person at The Museum of Modern Art.
