Catania
2004
From the collection of Victoria and Albert Museum
Catania is a 2004 by Cathryn Shine, depicting Gate, held at Victoria and Albert Museum.
This photo shows an old stone doorway with a fancy arch above it. The door is dark wood with two round knobs. On the right side, there’s a small potted plant with thin branches. The walls around the door look worn and cracked. The artist wrote “Catania” at the bottom, which might be the name of the place or just the title. The photo looks like it was taken from inside, peering out. Check out the Victoria and Albert Museum to see more work like this.
The 2004 photo-etching by Cathryn Shine presents a baroque doorway in Italy, featuring wooden panels and a carved stone mantle above. A smiling face is centered in the stone mantle, its headpiece merging into the surrounding brickwork. The open door reveals two potted plants inside, while a white graffiti tag is visible on the left side of the door. This work is part of a 24-print portfolio created for the SOFA Print Project.
