Ulcele cu flori

About this work

Arthur Verona painted bright vases of tulips in 1922. The flowers look almost real enough to smell. Soft light fills the canvas but keeps edges of petals loose. The brushstrokes are thick in places, thin in others, giving the vases a rough, handmade feel. This mix of bold and gentle paint is called impasto—thick paint that stands up off the canvas. Check out the Museum of Ethnography to see this painting in person.
