About this work

This painting shows a big, blocky figure with a pale face and a wide, toothy grin. The body is thick and angular, almost like stacked shapes. Bright colors—reds, greens, yellows—are smeared everywhere, some thick and some thin. The background is messy, with slashes of paint and no clear edges. The figure looks like it’s made of rough, uneven strokes. The artist used paint in heavy layers, almost like it was scraped on. That’s called *impasto*. Look up impasto to see how other artists used thick paint.
