Untitled is a 1945 by William Dring, held at Victoria and Albert Museum.
Two boys sit in bright green grass by a small wooden boat. One is squatting, holding the boat’s rope, while the other leans in, pointing at something inside. The background shows tall trees and a quiet body of water, painted in soft blues and greens. The boys’ clothes are simple—one in a striped shirt, the other in a collared one. The boat looks almost ready to float, with its smooth curves and dark wood. Notice how the artist used light to show the texture of the grass and the boys’ skin, making them look real. Look up chiaroscuro next to see how light and shadow create depth in paintings.
A 1945 print by William Dring depicts two boys beside a stream, one adjusting a toy sailing boat while the other observes; the first wears a white shirt and olive-green trousers, the second blue dungarees over a shirt with pale and darker blue dashes. The rural background includes a foreground stream, and the print is taken from a drawing later identified by the artist’s daughter as a commissioned double portrait of David and Peter Cobb.
