Untitled is a 1928 graphite by Wobbe Alkema, held at Museum of Modern Art.
This picture is mostly blank paper with a few bold shapes. There’s a tall black rectangle on the left, a curved black form below it, and some jagged lines crossing over. A small black circle sits near the top right. In the middle, a piece of newspaper is glued on, showing tiny text and a faint image. The artist cut and pasted the newspaper to mix real words with drawn shapes. The lines look like they’re pushing against each other, almost like a puzzle. Look up cross-hatching next to see how artists use lines to create depth.
Wobbe Alkema (1900–1984) was a Dutch artist, born in Nieuw-Buinen.
