Øregård Museum

Øregård Museum is an art museum situated in Hellerup on the northern outskirts of Copenhagen, Denmark. Established in 1921, it is owned by Gentofte Municipality and holds a significant topographic collection of pictures depicting Copenhagen and the area north of the city. The museum occupies a former country house built in 1806 by merchant and planter Johannes Søbøtker, whose fortune derived from the triangular trade and the Atlantic slave trade in the Danish West Indies. The museum's dual identity as both a historic Neoclassical building and a repository of regional visual culture makes it a notable cultural institution in the Copenhagen metropolitan area.

The estate's origins trace to a farm called Oregården, which belonged to Slot Bernstorff and was renamed Øregård in 1793. Johannes Søbøtker purchased the property in 1806 and commissioned French architect Joseph-Jacques Ramée, then working from Hamburg, to design a country house. Ramée, who also designed comparable residences for other wealthy families in the region including Sophienholm and Hellerupgård, created a white-washed Neoclassical structure with three storeys, a hipped roof with copper covering, and two-storey side wings. He also laid out the surrounding 20-hectare park in English landscape style, featuring an artificial lake and grotto.

Søbøtker's business interests suffered after the English Wars and the national bankruptcy of 1813, forcing him to sell Øregård in 1821. He subsequently moved to the Danish West Indies, where he became governor of Saint John and Saint Thomas. The property passed through several merchant owners: Johan Jørgen Hunæus (1821-1833), Joseph Hambro (1833-1843), Andreas Nicolai Hansen (1843-1873), his son Alfred Hansen (1873-1893), and finally Detlef Ohlsen (1893-1917). In 1917, Ohlsen's widow sold Øregård to Gentofte Municipality with the condition that the park remain publicly accessible. The building received protected status in 1918, and municipal gardener Gudmund Nyeland Brandt oversaw renovation of the park before the house opened as a museum in 1921.

The museum's collection is rooted in what was known as Den Hegelske Samling, assembled by Jacob Deichmann Frederik Hegel (1851-1918), managing director and owner of the publishing house Gyldendal. Following his death, his widow Julie Bagge (also recorded as Julie Hoel) bequeathed most of the collection to Gentofte Municipality in 1921, and it was transferred to Øregård upon the museum's opening.

The holdings comprise approximately 3,000 works in oil, watercolor, engraving, and drawing, spanning the period from 1750 to 1950. The collection's defining character is topographic: it documents Copenhagen and its surrounding region through the eyes of both celebrated and lesser-known artists. The assembled works provide a visual archive of urban and landscape development across two centuries, with particular strength in Danish Golden Age and later 19th-century artistic production.

The collection includes works by significant Danish artists such as Jens Juel, Vilhelm Petersen, Martinus Rørbye, C.W. Eckersberg, J.Th. Lundbye, Paul Fischer, L.A. Ring, and Olaf Rude, as well as Bertha Wegmann. Alongside these recognized names, numerous less famous artists are represented, reflecting the collection's documentary as well as aesthetic ambitions.

The museum also maintains an active exhibition program, hosting two to three special exhibitions annually. A distinctive tradition has been the presentation of retrospective exhibitions devoted to artists who were underrated or experienced adversity during their lifetimes. Past examples have included Elisabeth Jerichau-Baumann, Bertha Wegmann, Marie Krøyer, Hugo Larsen, Paul Fischer, and Vilhelm Hammershøi. Other exhibitions have addressed the history of the building and its connections to the Danish West Indies, or have focused on the surrounding local area.

The Øregård building is a white-washed Neoclassical country house designed by Joseph-Jacques Ramée, representative of his work in the region during the early 1800s. The interior retains portions of Ramée's original design. The surrounding park, originally laid out as a Romantic landscape garden in English style, was carefully renovated by Gudmund Nyeland Brandt after the municipality's acquisition of the property. Brandt served as municipal gardener and later parks director in Gentofte from 1914 to 1941. The park conversion created a public green space that complements the museum's cultural function, situated near the Øresund strait.

Øregård Museum is located in Hellerup, within Gentofte Municipality in the region of Sealand north of Copenhagen. It is owned by Gentofte Municipality and continues to serve as a public art museum.
