Annaborg

Annaborg is a Neoclassical building situated in Hillerød Municipality, Denmark, adjacent to Frederiksborg Castle. Completed in 1783, the structure originally served as the administrative headquarters for Frederiksborg County and was formerly known as Amtsstuegården. Today, it functions as a dedicated venue for temporary art exhibitions, operated by the Hillerød Art Association. Recognized for its historical and architectural significance, the building was listed in the Danish registry of protected buildings and places in 1945.

The building was constructed between 1782 and 1783 by Frederik Christian Brammer, the county manager of Frederiksborg Amt, who named it Annaborg after his wife, Anna. It originally served as the main wing of a larger four-winged administrative complex. The adjacent long, low half-timbered south wing contained the county office, while the shorter east and west wings housed horse stables, firewood storage, and a barn for grain collected as tithes from local peasants. Over time, the main building transitioned into the residence for the county's chief financial officer. The county relocated to a new headquarters in 1939, which now houses Hillerød Sognegård. During World War II, German occupying forces confiscated the property. Following the war, architect Carl Lundquist was charged with converting the interior into office space in 1947, removing former rooms like the dining room and gentleman's parlor. The building continued in local administrative use until 2006, after which Hillerød Municipality took ownership, utilizing it for social and child advisory services until 2014.

Since 2014, Annaborg has functioned as Kunsthuset Annaborg, a dedicated art space hosting rotating exhibitions of Danish and international contemporary art. The venue presents monthly openings for new shows that span a variety of media, including painting, graphics, sculpture, and ceramics. Exhibitions frequently feature works by both established and emerging artists. The intimate interior spaces and surrounding green outdoor areas create an inviting atmosphere for artistic displays, and the venue offers free admission to all exhibitions, supporting community engagement through memberships, artist submissions, and events.

In addition to its indoor gallery displays, Annaborg features a temporary sculpture garden. This outdoor extension of the gallery showcases select sculptural pieces on loan from the nearby Allerød Sculpture Park, adding a significant three-dimensional and outdoor component to the venue's artistic offerings.

Annaborg is located at Frederiksværksgade 2A in Hillerød, directly adjacent to the entrance of Frederiksborg Castle. The structure exemplifies the Neoclassical style prevalent in late 18th-century Danish architecture, characterized by symmetry, balanced proportions, and restrained classical motifs. The main building is a solid masonry edifice, primarily brick, plastered and whitewashed for a uniform appearance, resting on a base of hewn granite stones. Its facades feature even rhythms of windows, centralized entrances, and subtle decorative elements like profiled cornices. The surviving building is the former main northern wing of the original complex, with the former half-timbered wings no longer extant.

Annaborg is owned by Hillerød Municipality and rented to the Hillerød Art Association, which operates the building as an exhibition center. Prior to the handover on January 3, 2014, the municipality renovated the structure to adapt it for use as a dedicated art space while preserving its historical character. The building also accommodates a tourist information center for the VisitNordsjælland region. Annaborg is open to the public Thursday through Sunday from 12:00 to 16:00.
