Anne Dean Turk Fine Arts Center

The Anne Dean Turk Fine Arts Center, also known as the Anne Dean Turk Performing Arts Center, is a combined performing arts venue and art museum located on the campus of Kilgore College in Kilgore, Texas. Situated in Gregg County, the center serves as the academic home for the college's visual and performing arts departments. It houses two primary facilities, the Anne Dean Turk Art Gallery and the Van Cliburn Auditorium, and functions as the primary venue for the Texas Shakespeare Festival, the only professional theatre company in East Texas.

The facility's primary performance space, the Van Cliburn Auditorium, was constructed in 1966, and the building was originally known as the Applied Arts Building. On December 9, 1989, the structure was renamed in honor of Anne Dean Turk, a distinguished Kilgore College faculty member who taught piano, music theory, and piano ensemble from 1946 until her retirement in 1982. An alumna of the University of Texas at Austin, the Juilliard School, and Columbia University, Turk founded a Piano Concerto Program that provided students the rare opportunity to perform with a professional orchestra, a unique feature for a two-year college. In 1981, the Minnie Stevens Piper Foundation recognized her outstanding teaching by naming her a Piper Professor. The auditorium itself is named for the world-renowned concert pianist Van Cliburn. Although not an alumnus, Cliburn's legacy is honored through the naming of the venue and music scholarships offered in his name. Following the deaths of both Turk and Cliburn in 2013, the Kilgore College Piano Division hosted a memorial concert in their honor at the auditorium.

The Anne Dean Turk Art Gallery serves as the center's exhibition space, providing a dynamic venue for both emerging and established artists. Its mission is to foster cultural dialogue within the campus and the wider East Texas community. The gallery curates a diverse series of artistic exhibitions throughout the year, featuring shows by Kilgore College faculty, guest artists, and contemporary creators working across various media, including oil on canvas, ceramics, and mixed media. The gallery's programming highlights conceptual thinking, visual problem solving, and diverse artistic journeys, aiming to challenge and inspire both the student body and the broader public.

While the gallery does not maintain a permanent collection, its notable rotating exhibitions highlight regional and academic artistic talent. In 2019, the gallery hosted Local Color, an exhibition of landscape paintings by Peter Andrew, a professor from nearby Stephen F. Austin State University. Recent exhibition programming has featured figurative works exploring the tension between life and death by Wooldridge, mark-making explorations in pigments and various media by Gilmore, ceramic pieces by Jessica Sanders, and contemporary multi-artist shows such as Point of View, which brought together distinct voices including Luis E. The gallery also regularly showcases the artistic depth and innovation of its own faculty members, such as the TWO THOUSAND TWENTY FIVE exhibition.

The center is located at 1200 South Henderson Boulevard in Kilgore, Texas. Its main architectural feature is the Van Cliburn Auditorium, an intimate, 220-seat indoor theatre. The auditorium contains a flexible proscenium stage measuring approximately 30 by 30 feet, an orchestra pit, a stage apron, a center-stage trap, and a fly loft with 26 line sets. Wing space on both sides of the stage is limited, and a double door on stage left leads into a small scene shop area. The facility includes a walkable lighting balcony, and in 2010, the auditorium underwent an upgrade to its dimmer rack and control board. The seating layout includes a padded bench at the back for overflow audiences.

The Anne Dean Turk Fine Arts Center is owned and operated by Kilgore College. The Anne Dean Turk Art Gallery is open to the public from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., Monday through Friday, and admission is free. The Van Cliburn Auditorium serves as the primary performance space for the Kilgore College Theatre Department and hosts concerts by the college's musical ensembles, including the KC Connection choir and the Wind Symphony. The auditorium is also the home of the Texas Shakespeare Festival, founded by Raymond Caldwell, who also founded the college's Fine Arts Department. Each summer, the professional repertory company produces a season of plays in the auditorium, including Shakespearean works, a non-Shakespearean classic, a musical, and a children's show. For its 40th season in 2025, productions included Macbeth, Twelfth Night, Steel Magnolias, and Kiss Me, Kate, alongside Daisy Bradford 3, an original play about the East Texas oil discovery commissioned for the festival's inaugural season in 1986.
