Archaeological Museum of Ioannina

The Archaeological Museum of Ioannina is a major regional museum located in Litharitsa Park in the centre of Ioannina, the capital of the Epirus region in northwestern Greece. Established in 1970, the museum holds particular significance as the principal repository for archaeological finds from one of Greece's most historically layered regions, spanning from Palaeolithic times through the Roman period. Its collections illuminate the deep prehistory and classical history of Epirus, including renowned sites such as Dodona, the Oracle of Acheron, and ancient cemeteries at Vitsa.

The museum building was designed by the prominent Greek architect Aris Konstantinidis (1913-1993) and constructed between 1963 and 1966. It opened to the public on 1 August 1970. It originally also housed a display of Byzantine antiquities, which were relocated in 1992 to the newly established Byzantine Museum of Ioannina. The collection is organised across seven thematic rooms: prehistoric finds; the political and administrative organisation of the Epirus region; the Aeacidae and the kings of the Molossians; daily life; funerary customs; the Roman period; and the sanctuary of Dodona. A central corridor presents graphic displays of the major historical events of Epirus and its principal archaeological sites. This organisational scheme reflects both chronological progression and thematic depth, allowing visitors to trace the region's development from earliest human settlement through its integration into the Roman world.

The museum's most significant materials include Palaeolithic tools from Kokkinopilos, Asprochaliko, and Kastritsa, which document some of the earliest human activity in the region. From the classical period, finds from the ruins of Dodona, one of Greece's most ancient oracular sanctuaries, form a major component of the collection. The museum also holds material from the Oracle of Acheron, the necromanteion associated with the underworld river. Ancient cemeteries, notably at Vitsa, have yielded important funerary evidence. The numismatic collection and extensive inscriptions and grave stelae provide additional resources for understanding the epigraphy, economy, and social structures of ancient Epirus.

The museum occupies a purpose-built structure in Litharitsa Park, a central green space in Ioannina. The building was designed by Aris Konstantinidis, one of Greece's most influential modernist architects, whose career spanned from the 1930s until his death in 1993.
