Architekturzentrum Wien

The Architekturzentrum Wien (Az W) is Austria's national architecture museum, located in the Museumsquartier in Vienna's Neubau district. Founded in 1993 as a non-profit organisation through collaboration between the Austrian federal government and the city of Vienna, it serves as the country's leading centre for exhibitions, events, and research into architecture and urban design, with particular emphasis on the 20th and 21st centuries. The institution operates under joint stewardship of the Federal Ministry of Education, Art and Culture and Vienna's offices of culture and urban development, reflecting its status as a nationally significant cultural institution that bridges professional discourse and public engagement.

The Architekturzentrum Wien was established in 1993 on the initiative of both the Austrian federal government and the city of Vienna, an arrangement that signalled architecture's recognition as one of Austria's outstanding cultural achievements. For its first eight years, the centre operated from temporary exhibition venues within the Museumsquartier before moving into its present, substantially expanded premises in 2001. Dietmar Steiner served as founding director from 1993 to 2016, establishing the institution's focus on the social dimensions of architecture. Angelika Fitz became director in 2017, working alongside Karin Lux, who has managed business operations since 2004. In April 2026, the centre announced that German architect, architecture critic, and publisher Doris Kleilein will assume leadership in 2027.

The permanent exhibition "a_schau. Österreichische Architektur im 20. und 21. Jahrhundert" presents the history of Austrian architecture from 1850 to the present day. A newer permanent display, "Hot Questions, Cold Storage," complements this chronological survey. Among the centre's groundbreaking temporary exhibitions have been the first worldwide shows on Rural Studio and on the collective Assemble; "Wien. Die Perle des Reiches. Planen für Hitler," which was the first exhibition to examine construction activity in Vienna during the Nazi era; "Critical Care. Architektur für einen Planeten in der Krise"; and "Boden für Alle." Monographic exhibitions have featured architects including Bogdan Bogdanović, Alexander Brodsky, and Bernard Rudofsky. The centre has also mounted thematic shows such as "Chinaproduction," "Balkanology," "Architektur beginnt im Kopf," and "Form folgt Paragraph."

The Architekturzentrum Wien is situated within the Museumsquartier, one of Europe's largest cultural complexes, located in Vienna's Neubau district. After occupying provisional spaces from 1993 to 2001, the centre moved into its current location in 2001, where it disposes of approximately 1,000 square metres of exhibition space according to English-language sources, or 2,000 square metres total area according to German-language accounts. The museum's cafe and restaurant, MILO, is noted for its interior design.

The Architekturzentrum Wien remains in active operation with an extensive annual programme of over 500 events, including symposia, workshops, lectures, guided tours, urban expeditions, film series, and hands-on formats. In its first fifteen years, the centre organised more than 150 exhibitions, 300 events, and 600 architectural excursions. Visitors can access the public specialist reference library, the online database "Architektur Austria Gegenwart," and the online architects' lexicon.
