Art Mûr

Art Mûr is a private contemporary art gallery in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Founded in 1996, it is one of the largest private commercial galleries in the country, with seven exhibition spaces totaling 1,300 square metres. The gallery represents approximately thirty emerging and established artists and is a member of the Contemporary Art Galleries Association (AGAC).

Art Mûr was founded in 1996 by Rhéal Olivier Lanthier and François St-Jacques. The gallery began on Notre-Dame Street in Montreal's Saint-Henri neighbourhood. In 2002, it relocated to 5826 Saint Hubert Street in the borough of Rosemont, La Petite-Patrie, a strategic position between the Plateau-Mont-Royal and Little Italy districts. The gallery expanded its physical footprint over the years, inaugurating its seventh exhibition space in spring 2008. Lanthier was elected president of AGAC in March 2008. In 2003, the gallery was named Best New Space by Isa Tousignant in the Hour, and Lanthier and St-Jacques were named Best Gallery Directors by Christine Redfern in the Montreal Mirror. The gallery's tenth anniversary was featured on the cover of Vie des Arts, winter 2006-07 issue (vol. 50, no. 205). Art Mûr has also pursued collaborative projects with Canadian museum curators and directors, including a 2007 project with David Liss, then director of the Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art in Toronto, to introduce Montreal audiences to Toronto's artistic scene. That same year, Art Mûr was one of seven galleries selected for the Open Spaces exhibition at the Toronto International Art Fair (TIAF), where it presented Cal Lane's installation Filigree Car Bombing (2006).

Art Mûr represents a roster of roughly thirty artists, mixing emerging and established practitioners. The gallery notably maintains a balance between Quebec artists and those from elsewhere in Canada, a relatively uncommon practice among Quebec commercial contemporary galleries. The represented artists work across multiple mediums including painting, sculpture, photography, new media, and performance. Several artists in the gallery's stable have works in major museum collections. These include Cal Lane, whose work was acquired by the Art Gallery of Ontario; Diana Thorneycroft, represented in numerous Canadian collections including the National Gallery of Canada; and Nadia Myre. Other represented artists include Lois Andison, Patrick Beaulieu, Judith Berry, Simon Bilodeau, Michel Boulanger, Renato Garza Cervera, Magalie Comeau, Cooke-Sasseville, Robbie Cornelissen, Shayne Dark, Jakub Dolejs, Sarah Garzoni, Karine Giboulo, Nicolas Grenier, Annie Hémond-Hotte,wire Trevor Kiernander, Holly King, Guillaume Lachapelle, Laurent Lamarche, Bevan Ramsay, David Spriggs, Barbara Todd, Claude Tousignant, Henri Venne, Brandon Vickerd, Colleen Wolstenholme, Jinny Yu, and Ewa Monika Zebrowski.

The gallery has produced or distributed several publications tied to its exhibitions and artists. These include Fabrizio Perozzi (2004), Jinny Yu: To activate space (2008), Shayne Dark: Into the Blue (2008), Cal Lane: Sweet Crude (2009), Nadia Myre: En[counter]s (2011), De Cooke-Sasseville à aujourd'hui / From Cooke-Sasseville to Today (2012), Derrière la façade (2014), Event Horizon: This Must Be the Place, Trevor Kiernander (2016), and Mysterious Holly King: Edging Towards the Mysterious (2015). The gallery also produces Invitation, a bilingual twenty-page booklet published six times annually in an edition of 2,200 copies, distributed free to the Canadian artistic community.

Since 2002, Art Mûr has occupied 5826 Saint Hubert Street in the Rosemont, La Petite-Patrie borough. The gallery's premises encompass seven exhibition spaces totaling 1,300 square metres. The location sits between two of Montreal's most prominent neighbourhoods, the Plateau-Mont-Royal and Little Italy.
