Art Museum Z33

Z33 is an art institution in Hasselt, Belgium, that connects contemporary art, design, and architecture with social themes. Founded in 1996 and restructured as Z33, House for Contemporary Art, in 2002, it presents itself explicitly as an art centre rather than a museum. The institution initiates, produces, and displays temporary exhibitions without maintaining a permanent collection, focusing on the intersection between contemporary art and critical design. Its projects address social developments and scientific phenomena, and it has grown into an internationally recognised organisation with structural support from the Flemish Community since 2006.

The name Z33 derives from Zuivelmarkt 33, the address of the gatehouse of the Hasselt beguinage, which had served a cultural function since 1938. From 1946 to 1979 it housed the provincial library of Limburg, and exhibition spaces were added from 1959. Various names and organisational forms followed, including the Provincial Museum and the multidisciplinary Centre for Arts-Beguinage. In 1996 these merged into the Provincial Centre for Visual Arts (PCBK). In 2002, Z33, House for Contemporary Art, emerged from this predecessor, programming thematic projects in the beguinage houses and the modernist exhibition building Vleugel 58. From 2008 the organisation expanded into art in open space, with the see-through church Reading Between the Lines as its best-known realisation. Structural support from the Flemish Community within the Arts decree began in 2006, enabling a supra-local artistic and public operation that draws approximately 30,000 visitors annually. On 1 January 2018, following internal reform of the Flemish government, the Province of Limburg ceased to be responsible for culture; Z33 became an independent non-profit organisation, assuming the former provincial tasks and absorbing four smaller organisations: Cultuurplatform Design, vzw Kunst in Open Ruimte, Platform Kunst in Limburg, and vzw KOPIJ. In January 2020, under new artistic director Adinda Van Geystelen, Z33 closed its chapter in the beguinage houses and moved to Bonnefantenstraat 1. The new programme launched on 21 May 2020 after pandemic-related delays.

Z33 does not hold a permanent collection. Its programming consists entirely of temporary exhibitions initiated and produced in-house, with a thematic focus on the borderlands between contemporary art and design. The institution addresses social themes through collaborations with artistic and scientific partners, and it maintains a commitment to talent development through FORMAT (formerly Toegepast), a project supporting artists and designers on the verge of their breakthrough, alongside solo exhibitions. Its activities extend internationally through regular presence at Milan Design Week and curatorial engagements with biennales, including Manifesta 9 in Flanders (2012), the Design Biennale of Ljubljana (2014), and the Design Biennale of Istanbul (2018).

As an institution without a permanent collection, Z33's notable realisations take the form of commissioned projects and exhibitions rather than owned objects. In art in open space, the see-through church Reading Between the Lines stands as the best-known realisation. Exhibition highlights have included solo presentations by Kris Verdonck (2011) and Konstantin Grcic (2015), as well as thematic shows such as Mind The System, Find The Gap (2012), Space Odyssey 2.0 (2013), Palms, Palms, Palms (2021), Le Déracinement (2021), In the Eye of the Storm (2022), and Mae-ling Lokko (2022). Public space projects include Pit in Borgloon, the Hasselt-Genk Union, and from 2024 the Art on the Meuse project, which will place artworks in five Maasland municipalities on the Dutch border. Urban anchoring projects include the mural I was here by Pavel Balta in Hasselt's Ter Hilst district and the social sculpture The Play by Ief Spincemaille in Genk. In 2020, Z33 received European subsidy for Wanderful.stream, a four-year interdisciplinary innovation project on residual flows from SMEs in the Euregion.

Z33 is located in the former beguinage of Hasselt. In 2020 the existing building was renovated and a new exhibition wing, Vleugel 19, was constructed along Bonnefantenstraat. The new wing was designed by Italian architect Francesca Torzo as a sober, restrained structure fitting into the historic urban fabric. Its diamond-shaped brick exterior matches the brick architecture of the existing Vleugel 58, designed by architect Gustaaf Daniëls, and the adjoining beguinage. The two wings differ in character but complement each other as an ensemble, fitting between the Jenevermuseum and the historic beguinage site. The entire project was budgeted at 8.5 million euros. The interior comprises a cluster of spaces that turn light red in sunlight, with entrance walls sloped at 58 degrees in reference to Vleugel 58. Exhibition spaces vary considerably: some lack daylight, others are high and narrow, and others large and wide with garden views. The building's varied ceiling heights include diamond-patterned acoustic treatments. The centre is accessible from Bonnefantenstraat and opens onto the redesigned beguinage garden. Vleugel 19 has received the Piranesi Award (2018), the Italian Architecture Prize (2020), the Moira Gemmill Prize for Emerging Architecture (2020), and a longlist nomination for the Mies van der Rohe Award 2022.

Z33 is located at Bonnefantenstraat 1 in Hasselt, in the province of Limburg, Belgium. The institution is accessible via Bonnefantenstraat, with views onto the redesigned beguinage garden. Since 2018 it has operated as an non-profit organisation with its own staff, following the transfer of cultural responsibility away from the Province of Limburg. The combined Vleugel 58 and Vleugel 19 provide 4,600 square metres of exhibition space, allowing three to four exhibitions to run simultaneously. The institution receives approximately 30,000 visitors annually and continues its programming of temporary exhibitions, public art projects, and international collaborations.
