Casa Roig Museum

The Casa Roig Museum is a historic house museum and gallery located in Humacao, Puerto Rico. Designed in 1920 by the prominent Czech architect Antonin Nechodoma (1877-1928), who was a resident of Puerto Rico, it was originally built as a residence for the wealthy sugar planter Antonio Roig. The museum stands as the only complete residential structure by Nechodoma still extant and is widely regarded as one of his finest works. It holds particular significance as a rare example of the Prairie School architectural style adapted to the Caribbean context, and it has been recognized with listings on both the U.S. National Register of Historic Places and the Puerto Rico Register of Historic Sites and Zones.

The house was inhabited by the Roig family until 1956, after which it remained closed for more than two decades. On August 13, 1977, the heirs of Antonio Roig donated the residence to the University of Puerto Rico, which assumed responsibility for its restoration and preservation. Architects Otto Reyes and Tom Marvel directed the restoration work, which spanned ten years. The Casa Roig opened to the public in 1989 as a regional museum. The building was listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places in 1977, and later on the Puerto Rico Register of Historic Sites and Zones on May 16, 2001. In September 2017, the museum's roof sustained damage when Hurricane Maria struck Puerto Rico.
