Castellani House, Guyana

Castellani House is the home of Guyana's National Art Gallery, located in Georgetown, Guyana. The building stands at the corner of Vlissengen Road and Homestretch Avenue, adjacent to the Botanical Gardens. Designed and constructed by the Maltese architect Cesar Castellani between 1879 and 1882, the house served colonial government officials before its conversion to a public art institution. Since 1993, it has housed the national collection, making it the principal venue for the display and preservation of Guyanese art.

Cesar Castellani, one of the most prominent and prolific architects of the colonial era in British Guiana, designed the house between 1879 and 1882. It was originally intended as a residence for government botanist George Samuel Jenman, who had been transferred from Jamaica to British Guiana to supervise the conversion of the area into a联络 Botanical Gardens and to oversee landscaping improvements to Georgetown. Dissatisfied with the original design, Jenman refused to move in until modifications were completed in 1882. After Jenman's death, the building became the official residence for Directors of Agriculture. In 1942, a third storey was added to the original two-storey structure. In 1965, Guyanese architect Hugh McGregor Reid carried out further structural changes. From 1965 to 1985, the house served as the official residence of Prime Minister Forbes Burnham and First Lady Viola Burnham, during which period it was known simply as "the Residence." State House replaced it as the president's residence in the 1990s. Following a major refurbishment, Castellani House reopened as the National Art Gallery in 1993. The inaugural exhibition took place on 24 May 1993, and the building acquired its current name in honour of its architect. Everley Austin served as the gallery's first curator from 1994 to 1996, followed by Elfrieda Bissember, who has held the position from 1996 to the present.

The National Art Gallery at Castellani House holds over 700 works of art. The collection represents a significant gathering of Guyanese artistic production, encompassing works by major figures in the country's art history. It serves as the principal repository for nationally significant artworks in Guyana.

The collection includes works by Frank Bowling, E. R. Burrowes, Stanley Greaves, Bernadette Persaud, George Simon, Denis Williams, and Aubrey Williams. These artists represent key figures in Guyanese and diasporic art, spanning painting and other media.
