Cineteca Italiana

Cineteca Italiana is a private film archive in Milan, Italy, that ranks among Europe's most significant repositories of cinematic heritage. Founded in 1947 and reconstituted as a foundation in 1996, it holds particular distinction in the field of silent cinema. The International Federation of Film Archives (FIAF) has recognized it as one of the continent's most important archives for silent film. Beyond preservation, the institution actively restores films for presentation at major international cinema events and maintains its own screening facilities.

The archive was established in 1947 and later became a foundation in 1996, a structural change that formalized its institutional status. In 1985, it opened a museum dedicated to early cinema at Palazzo Dugnani. A major relocation occurred in 2012, when both the museum and administrative offices moved to the former Tobacco Factory on viale Fulvio Testi 121, a project carried out in collaboration with the Lombardy Region. This move allowed for significant expansion of the museum's facilities. Since 1997, the Cineteca has published an editorial series on cinema history, the Quaderni Fondazione Cineteca Italiana. A scholarly history of the institution, La Cineteca italiana: una storia milanese by Francesco Casetti, was published in 2005.

The Cineteca Italiana preserves over 20,000 films and more than 100,000 photographs documenting Italian and international cinema history. Its nitrate film section is especially significant, forming the basis of its international reputation. The archive also holds a substantial collection of original screenplays and a corpus of 15,000 posters spanning both silent and sound cinema eras. Additional holdings include various projectors and historical cinema artifacts. The institution is actively engaged in film restoration, with restored works presented at leading international film events and in its own screening rooms.

The archive's most celebrated holdings are in its nitrate film collection, which FIAF has singled out as placing the institution among Europe's foremost silent film archives. The 15,000-poster collection and the extensive photographic archive of over 100,000 images represent major resources for film historical research. The original screenplays and cinema artifacts complement these moving image and visual materials.

The Cineteca Italiana currently occupies the former Tobacco Factory (ex Manifattura Tabacchi) on viale Fulvio Testi 121 in Milan. This industrial building was adapted to house the expanded museum and offices in 2012. The same building also accommodates two related educational institutions: the Civic School of Cinema "Luchino Visconti" and the Lombard branch of the Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia, Italy's national film school. This co-location creates a concentrated center of film culture, preservation, and training in northeastern Milan.
