Overview

The Colegio de Nuestra Señora de los Infantes (College of Our Lady of the Infants) is a historic educational institution in Toledo, Castile-La Mancha, Spain, founded in the sixteenth century by Juan Martínez Silíceo, Archbishop of Toledo and later cardinal. Originally established to provide specialist musical education for the cathedral's young singers, the school has operated continuously for over four centuries, though it relocated from its original historic building in the 1980s. The original structure, completed in 1559, is listed as a Bien de Interés Cultural and stands as a rare freestanding building in Toledo's densely built historic core.

Founding & history

On July 22, 1552, Cardinal Juan Martínez Silíceo founded the college to train boys known as cleriçones who sang and assisted in the liturgical services of Toledo's cathedral. Though the foundation charter dates to 1552, precedents for child singers at the cathedral extend back to the twelfth century. On May 9, 1557, Silíceo signed the Constitutions that would govern the institution. The cardinal appointed the dean and chapter of the cathedral as perpetual administrators and designated a priest of the cathedral as director. The Constitutions stipulated that resident teachers of Grammar and Music also be priests, and Article 14 famously ordered that the boys be dressed in colored garments, specifically red cassocks and white surplices, a tradition that continues. Over the centuries, various archbishops augmented the college's endowment, notably Cardinal Pascual de Aragón in 1667, who bequeathed all his goods to the institution. On December 15, 1961, Cardinal Pla y Deniel reformed the statutes to align with contemporary educational legislation, creating a governing board of cathedral canons and appointing a vicerector. Rising student numbers eventually made the original building inadequate, and in 1978 a protocol was signed between the Catholic Parents' Association and the cathedral chapter to construct a new facility, leading to the school's relocation in the 1980s.

Collection scope

The Colegio de Nuestra Señora de los Infantes was never primarily a collecting institution but rather a living center of musical training and liturgical practice. Its holdings and resources were functional, oriented toward the education of choirboys who formed part of the cathedral's musical establishment. The college's connection to the cathedral's capilla de música meant that its students participated in one of Spain's most prestigious musical environments, where masters such as Cristóbal de Morales in the sixteenth century and Francisco Antonio Gutiérrez in the eighteenth century served as directors. The educational scope encompassed both musical and general instruction, with periods of incorporation into the Royal University of Toledo.

Notable holdings

While the college itself did not maintain a formal art collection, its architectural fabric contains significant artistic elements. The main doorway is the building's principal artistic feature, framed by two caryatids and surmounted by Cardinal Silíceo's coat of arms held by two putti. Above the entablature, decorated with masks, tritons, and additional putti, sits a tondo depicting the Virgin and Child of Italianate influence, flanked by seated personifications of Justice and Faith. The window grilles are fine works by Master Domingo de Céspedes, the cathedral's ironsmith. The building's most celebrated products were human rather than material, its alumni including nineteenth-century musicians Guillermo Cerceda and Francisco Sanz, the latter a singer in the Royal Palace Music Chapel, and twentieth-century composer Jacinto Guerrero, creator of zarzuelas including Los Gavilanes, El huésped del Sevillano, and La rosa del azafrán. The college also counts Saint Alonso de Orozco, patron of the Seises of Toledo, among its former pupils.

Building & site

The original building was completed in 1559 through the remodeling of an existing property rather than new construction. Its irregular plan was dictated by the surrounding streets, resulting in the unusual condition, for Toledo, of a freestanding structure unconnected to neighboring buildings. Don Francisco de Villalpando, also designer of the screen of the cathedral's main presbytery, was responsible for the plan and execution, while Alonso de Covarrubias likely served as principal master of works given the strong ties between the college and the cathedral chapter. The building is organized around two irregular courtyards and lacks a grand staircase. The exterior is of plain masonry with a certain regularity in its window openings. Entry is through a doorway leading to a vestibule. The main portal is surrounded by rusticated stonework applied over the masonry wall. The structure is protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural.

Visiting

The Colegio de Nuestra Señora de los Infantes continues to operate as an educational institution, though it has moved to a new location on Avenida de Europa in Toledo. The school now enrolls approximately 1,500 students from the first year of infants through the second year of baccalaureate. The original sixteenth-century building remains in the historic center, its heritage status ensuring preservation. The modern institution maintains its foundational mission of contributing acolytes and scholars to the dignity of worship and the solemnity of liturgical ceremonies at the cathedral, as codified in Article 115 of its internal regulations. The archbishop of Toledo serves as rector of the college, with the cathedral chapter as patron, continuing the governance structure established by Cardinal Silíceo.
