Design Museum Holon

Design Museum Holon (Hebrew: מוזיאון העיצוב חולון) is the first museum in Israel dedicated to design. Located in the city of Holon, Israel, the institution opened on 3 March 2010. It serves as a national platform for presenting design and contextualizing Israeli design within the broader global discourse. The museum is internationally recognized for its striking architecture and its role as a dynamic hub for exploring design across multiple disciplines, from industrial products and fashion to visual communication.

In March 2003, the Municipality of Holon invited Ron Arad Architects to design and develop the first national design museum in Israel. The project was conceived to endorse the importance of design in a young emerging state and to create a significant exhibition collection. The museum officially opened its doors on 3 March 2010. Shortly after its inauguration, the institution gained international recognition when the travel magazine Conde Nast Traveler noted it as one of the new world wonders.

The museum's collection is a young, evolving, and dynamic assembly organized along four main continuums: Historical Design, featuring works created in Israel from the 1930s to 2000; Contemporary Design, comprising works from Israel and around the world from 2000 onward; Commissioned Works, created specifically for museum exhibitions; and Academic Projects, showcasing a selection of graduate works from Israeli design academies. The holdings encompass unique objects, small and large edition items, models, furniture, visual communication, textile designs, fashion, jewelry, shoes, and accessories. Because design methods and technology evolve rapidly, objects marking innovation can quickly become part of design history. The museum uses these four continuums to create content and subject-matter cross-sections independent of time or place definitions. The collection is presented in two spaces: the Design Lab, which engages in lateral issues, and the Collection Windows, which allows close scrutiny of individual objects.

While the museum does not mount permanent exhibitions, it has hosted notable curated shows exploring food-related design, functional everyday objects, and the role of emotion in design. It has also featured exhibitions dedicated to international designers such as Alber Elbaz, Lea Gottlieb, Jaime Hayon, and Stephen Jones. In 2015 and 2017, the museum produced an exhibit of unrealized designs created for Alessi, featuring the work of Acconci Studio, Carlo and Giovanni Alessi, Andrea Branzi, Gary Chang, Scott Henderson, Hans Hollein, Toyo Ito, Marcel Wanders, and Zaha Hadid. A specific documented work in the collection is the Voido Chair, designed by Ron Arad in 2006.

The museum building was designed by Israeli architect and industrial designer Ron Arad in cooperation with architect Bruno Asa. It is Arad's first architectural project. The structure is defined by five massive bands of Corten steel that twist and coil around the central building, serving as the structural and conceptual backbone. These weathering steel ribbons define exterior pathways, create shaded interstitial spaces, and allow the building to be entered from multiple points and levels. Internally, the museum consists of two main wings connected by a light-filled central atrium. It houses two main exhibition halls: a lower gallery of approximately 250 square meters and a daylight-illuminated upper gallery of approximately 500 square meters. A design lab space of approximately 100 square meters is also part of the interior. The museum is situated in the eastern part of the new culture area of Holon, which includes a mediathèque housing the central library, a theater, and a cinematheque. The faculty of design at the Holon Institute of Technology is located nearby.
