Fitchburg Art Museum

The Fitchburg Art Museum (FAM) is a regional art museum in Fitchburg, Worcester County, Massachusetts, United States. Founded in 1925, it serves Fitchburg, Leominster, and surrounding communities in north-central Massachusetts and southern New Hampshire. The museum has distinguished itself as a community-focused institution, notably working to become New England's first fully bilingual art museum, and offers free admission to all visitors.

The museum was founded in 1925 through a bequest of Eleanor Norcross, an artist, collector, and educator. It was designed by Mary Almy and opened to the public on April 17, 1929, in the Merriam Parkway Building in downtown Fitchburg. The institution was originally known as the Fitchburg Art Center and was renamed the Fitchburg Art Museum in 1951. In 2012, FAM launched a rotating contemporary New England artist exhibition program to connect its historical collections with contemporary art practices, and it continues an annual survey show featuring recent work by living New England artists.

The museum's permanent collection includes more than than 7,000 artworks. Its strengths lie in American art and photography, African art, and Ancient Egyptian art. The collection includes works by Fitchburg-based artists Eleanor Norcross, Samuel Adams, and Constance Bigelow. The Egyptian collection is presented in an interactive gallery designed for families and school groups. Since 2012, the museum has integrated contemporary regional art through rotating exhibitions that complement its historical holdings. Each temporary exhibition is accompanied by an interactive educational exhibit in the Learning Lounge, where visitors can learn about what they are seeing and better understand their own reactions to the exhibits.

The collection features works by Fitchburg-based artists, including founder Eleanor Norcross, Samuel Adams, and Constance Bigelow. The Ancient Egyptian art collection is a particular strength and is displayed in an interactive gallery format. The museum also holds significant American photography and African art.

The museum occupies a complex of four interconnected buildings with more than 20,000 square feet of exhibition and educational space. It is located in downtown Fitchburg in the Merriam Parkway Building, where it first opened in 1929.

As of 2026, according to the Worcester Telegram & Gazette, FAM is one of the nation's few fully bilingual art museums, with all exhibition text available in English and Spanish. This initiative responds to local demographics: 39% of Fitchburg's population is Latino, and 55% of children in Fitchburg Public Schools come from homes where Spanish is the primary language.
