Funen's Art Museum

Funen's Art Museum (Danish: Fyns Kunstmuseum) was an art museum in Odense, Denmark, founded in 1885 and operating as part of the Odense City Museums (Odense Bys Museer). Located at Jernbanegade 13, it was one of Denmark's oldest art museums, dedicated to Danish art from 1750 onward with particular strength in concrete and Constructivist art. The museum ceased to operate as an independent institution in 2014, and since 2018 its former building has housed the Funen Academy of Arts (Det Fynske Kunstakademi).

The museum was founded in 1885 as a regional counterpart to the National Gallery (Nationalgalleriet, later Statens Museum for Kunst). It was established to serve as a miniature version of the national institution, bringing important Danish art to the island of Funen. The museum carried earlier names including The Museum of Funen Diocese (Fyns Stiftsmuseum) and Museum Civitatis Othiniensis. For much of its existence it operated under the umbrella of Odense City Museums. The institution closed as an independent museum in 2014, ending nearly 130 years of continuous operation. Four years later, in 2018, the building was repurposed to accommodate the Funen Academy of Arts, marking a shift from public museum to educational institution.

The collection spanned Danish art from 1750 onward, with special emphasis on concrete art and Danish Constructivism. Its holdings were representative of Funen and its surrounding regions, reflecting the museum's role as a regional collecting institution. The older section of the collection contained principal works by major Danish artists, while later acquisitions and displays focused particularly on the concrete and Constructivist movements that became the museum's distinguishing specialty. This concentration distinguished it from other Danish regional museums and aligned it with significant developments in twentieth-century Danish art.

The museum's collection included principal works by Jens Juel, Dankvart Dreyer, P.S. Krøyer, and H.A. Brendekilde in its older section. These represented major figures of Danish painting from the late eighteenth through late nineteenth centuries. The collection also featured works by modernists including Harald Giersing, Vilhelm Lundstrøm, Olaf Rude, and Vilhelm Bjerke Petersen, reflecting the museum's commitment to twentieth-century developments and its particular strength in concrete and Constructivist art.

The museum occupied a stately neo-classical building at Jernbanegade 13 in Odense, constructed in 1883-1884 with Emil Schwanenflügel (1847-1921) as supervising architect. The structure featured a characteristic temple gable and a decorated frieze depicting scenes from Denmark's history and Norse mythology. This monumental classical architecture provided a dignified setting for the art collection and contributed to the museum's identity as an important cultural institution in the city.

The museum was located in Odense Municipality on the island of Funen, Denmark's third-largest island. As part of Odense City Museums, it operated under municipal ownership and management. Following its closure as an independent museum in 2014, the building at Jernbanegade 13 has served since 2018 as the home of the Funen Academy of Arts (Det Fynske Kunstakademi), an educational institution continuing the site's connection to visual arts in the region.
