Galerie Perrotin

Galerie Perrotin is a contemporary art gallery founded by Emmanuel Perrotin in Paris in 1990. Beginning as a modest apartment-based space, it has grown into one of the most prominent international gallery networks in the contemporary art world, with locations across Paris, Hong Kong, New York, Seoul, Tokyo, Shanghai, Dubai, and Los Angeles. The gallery is recognized for its early support of now-major artists, its strategic expansion into Asian markets, and its diversified activities spanning exhibitions, publishing, digital media, and art fairs. In 2022, the gallery reported revenue of 140 million euros, and in June 2023 it entered a partnership with investment fund Colony IM.

Emmanuel Perrotin established the gallery in 1990, initially renting an apartment on Rue de Turbigo in Paris before moving to Rue de Beaubourg, which he converted into a gallery space. The gallery occupied various Parisian locations before settling in 2005 into an 18th-century townhouse in the Marais district. In June 2020, it opened an additional 70 square meter space on Avenue Matignon in western Paris. International expansion began in 2012 with the inauguration of Perrotin Hong Kong, followed by New York in 2013, Seoul in 2016, Tokyo in June 2017, Shanghai in 2018, Dubai in 2022, and Los Angeles in 2024. The New York location moved from a historic Upper East Side site on Madison Avenue to a landmark building on Orchard Street in the Lower East Side in April 2017. In August 2022, the gallery opened Perrotin Dosan Park in Seoul, a two-story building with approximately 250 square meters of exhibition space. By 2020, the gallery's worldwide surface area totaled 7,100 square meters. The gallery has participated in major art fairs including FIAC in Paris until its closure in 2022, Art Basel, Frieze, and TEFAF New York, among others.

Galerie Perrotin represents a diverse roster of established and emerging contemporary artists across multiple media and nationalities. The gallery gained early recognition for representing two now-prominent artists at the beginnings of their careers: Maurizio Cattelan and Takashi Murakami. In 1993, Perrotin brought Cattelan's work to the NiCAF contemporary art fair in Yokohama when the artist was still relatively unknown. In 1994, the gallery showed Murakami's work at the Gramercy International Art Fair in New York, becoming the first to exhibit his work outside Japan. The gallery also represents significant French artists including Sophie Calle, Tatiana Trouve, Xavier Veilhan, Jean-Michel Othoniel, and Bernard Frize. Its expansion into Asian markets brought artists such as Aya Takano, Mr., and Bharti Kher into its roster. Beyond visual artists, the gallery has collaborated with musicians including Feist, Massive Attack, N.E.R.D., and Pharrell Williams. The gallery continues to work with younger artists such as KAWS and JR.

The gallery's most historically significant holdings and exhibitions center on its early presentations that helped launch major careers. The 1993 presentation of Maurizio Cattelan's work at NiCAF Yokohama and the 1994 New York debut of Takashi Murakami at the Gramercy International Art Fair stand as pivotal moments in the gallery's history, predating by a decade the commercial breakthrough of both artists. The gallery's Paris location in the Marais district, occupying two floors with an additional exhibition space across the street, has hosted exhibitions drawing up to 900 visitors daily. The Seoul gallery in Jongno District is positioned opposite the Blue House, the former presidential residence, and Gyeongbok Palace, placing it within a significant cultural and political corridor. The Hong Kong space, opened in May 2012 and designed by architect Andre Fu, was relocated in 2020 to K11 Atelier, Victoria Dockside, Tsim Sha Tsui.

The gallery's primary Paris location occupies an 18th-century townhouse in the Marais district, with exhibition space spread across two floors and an additional space across the street. The Avenue Matignon location, opened in June 2020, provides a 70 square meter space in western Paris. The Hong Kong gallery was originally designed by architect Andre Fu at 50 Connaught Road Central before relocating to K11 Atelier, Victoria Dockside, Tsim Sha Tsui in 2020. The New York gallery moved from Madison Avenue in the Upper East Side to a full landmark building on Orchard Street in the Lower East Side in April 2017, incorporating a large bookshop. The Seoul gallery in Jongno District opened in 2016 with 200 square meters, while Perrotin Dosan Park, opened in August 2022, was designed by KIAS (Kentaro Ishida Architects Studio) in collaboration with Yoki Design and Kenny Ho, offering approximately 250 square meters across two floors. The Tokyo gallery, opened in June 2017, occupies the first floor of the Piramide Building at 6-6-9 Roppongi Minato-ku in the heart of Roppongi, with 140 square meters of space.

Galerie Perrotin operates as a commercial gallery with multiple locations accessible to the public. The Paris galleries are located in the Marais district and on Avenue Matignon, with the Marais location capable of receiving up to 900 visitors daily during certain exhibitions. International locations include Hong Kong at K11 Atelier, Victoria Dockside, Tsim Sha Tsui; New York on Orchard Street in the Lower East Side; Seoul in both Jongno District and Dosan Park; Tokyo in Roppongi; Shanghai in the Bund district; Dubai; and Los Angeles, where a permanent gallery opened in 2024 following temporary exhibitions in 2023. The gallery maintains an active presence on social media and produces digital content including videos and podcasts under the title L'amour de l'art. Its Perrotin Store bookshops sell artist books, editions, and prints. The gallery also organizes educational events such as conferences and children's workshops. In June 2023, the gallery formed an alliance with investment fund Colony IM, marking a new phase in its corporate structure.
