Overview
Galerie Philia is an international contemporary art and sculptural design gallery with locations in Mexico City, Geneva, New York, and Singapore. Established in 2015, the gallery takes its name from the ancient Greek word for friendship or affection. It organizes permanent and temporary exhibitions featuring national and international artists and designers, distinguishing itself through site-specific presentations that place contemporary works within historically and architecturally significant venues.
Founding & history
The gallery was founded in 2015 by the Attali brothers. Since its inception, Galerie Philia has expanded its operations across four major cities while maintaining a robust program of temporary exhibitions. In 2022, the gallery launched Art Brut, a sculpture workshop for young children in Breil-sur-Roya, extending its activities into educational programming. The institution marked its tenth anniversary in 2025 with STRATES, an exhibition held at Les Espaces d'Abraxas, a brutalist building near Paris.
Collection scope
The gallery focuses on contemporary art and sculptural design. Its program bridges early modernist design with contemporary creations, fostering dialogues between historical architectural contexts and current artistic practices. The gallery regularly commissions works that respond directly to their exhibition environments, ranging from modernist landmarks to private residences and sacred spaces.
Notable holdings
Galerie Philia has presented works by designers such as Rick Owens and projects designed by Pietro Franceschini and Jean Nouvel. In 2023, the gallery exhibited Antipodes, a series of rock sculptures by Pilar Zeta and Andrés Monnier, during Mexico City Art Week. Its 2025 exhibition, Then and Now: Brazilian Legacy, combined early Brazilian modernist design with contemporary works. Other thematic exhibitions include Desacralized, exploring the concept of desacralization, and Future Relics, which featured contemporary works inspired by the cultural heritage and archives of Medici Florence.
Building & site
The gallery is recognized for situating its exhibitions within architecturally significant sites rather than conventional gallery spaces. In 2021, it mounted an exhibition at Walker Tower in New York. The 2022 exhibition Jean Nouvel: Racines Aériennes was notably the first art and design exhibition held in a private residence designed by Jean Nouvel. Other venues include the Cité radieuse de Marseille, the 16th-century Giardino Corsini al Prato in Florence, the Chiesa di San Vittore e Quaranta martiri in Milan, the Niterói Contemporary Art Museum in Rio de Janeiro, and the brutalist Les Espaces d'Abraxas near Paris.
Visiting
Galerie Philia maintains permanent locations in Mexico, Geneva, New York, and Singapore. The gallery operates internationally, organizing exhibitions that align with major global art and design events, such as the Milan Furniture Fair and Mexico City Art Week. Its official website provides current information on its programming and locations.
