Hollands Kaasmuseum

Hollands Kaasmuseum is a museum dedicated to the history and production of Dutch cheese, situated in Alkmaar, Netherlands. Established to preserve and showcase the centuries-old traditions of cheese-making, the institution provides an in-depth exploration of dairy culture, from its rural beginnings to the modern industry. It presents the complete narrative of cheese production, from the cow to the final product, through interactive displays, historical artifacts, and art. Drawing approximately 35,000 visitors annually, the museum serves as a key cultural institution in a city historically famous for its cheese trade.

The museum traces its origins to 1969, when the Stichting Hollands Zuivelarchief was established and began collecting dairy-related objects. The museum itself officially opened on April 21, 1983. Over the years, the institution expanded its holdings and exhibitions, significantly growing its collection. In 2001, it acquired a depot in Stompetoren on loan from Campina Melkunie. Subsequently, in 2013, the foundation loaned the Melkunie archive to the Noord-Hollands Archief. A major full redesign occurred in 2014, allowing the museum to present the history of Dutch cheese in a more elaborate and engaging manner.

The collection encompasses a wide range of materials that illustrate the history of cheese making, farming culture, and the dairy trade. Holdings include historical artifacts, utensils, photographic images, and films. The exhibits cover both farm-based and factory-based preparation of dairy products, alongside the broader context of rural life and trade. Interactive elements, such as touchscreen displays, games, and films, are integrated throughout the museum to engage visitors of all ages, including a specially designed scavenger hunt for children to explore the process from cow to cheese.

Among the notable holdings are twenty-four 16th-century portraits of women from Holland, which form a distinct part of the museum's art collection. The broader art collection also includes paintings, sculptures, and photographs that highlight the cultural significance of cheese in Dutch society. Additionally, the museum features life-sized models of cheese carriers, merchants, and farmers, as well as authentic cheese market tools and equipment that illustrate the historical dynamics of the Alkmaar Cheese Market.

The museum is housed in the monumental Weigh House, known as the Waag, located on the Waagplein in the center of Alkmaar. This historic Gothic-style building dates back to 1390. The site is historically significant as the center of the city's cheese trade and the location where the famous Alkmaar Cheese Market is held. The building itself thus provides a fitting and authentic backdrop for the museum's exploration of the regional dairy industry and its historical trade practices.

The museum is located at Waagplein in Alkmaar and is easily accessible by public transportation, with the Alkmaar train station a short walk away, as well as nearby public parking. It accepts the Netherlands Museum Pass, and standard admission is 7.50 euros for adults and 3.50 euros for children aged 4 to 12, with free entry for children 0 to 3 years. Standard opening hours are Monday to Thursday and Saturday from 10:00 to 16:00, Friday from 09:00 to 16:00, and Sunday from 12:00 to 16:00. The facility is fully accessible for wheelchairs and mobility scooters, and group visits can be arranged year-round by appointment through VVV Alkmaar.
