IKEA Museum

The IKEA Museum is a corporate history museum in Älmhult, southern Sweden, that opened to the public on 30 June 2016. It documents the history of IKEA, the Swedish furnishings company founded by Ingvar Kamprad, and occupies a site of particular significance: the building that housed the very first IKEA store, which opened on the same date in 1958. The museum replaced a smaller predecessor exhibition, IKEA Through the Ages, expanding the presentation from 800 m2 to 3500 m2 and establishing itself as the principal institution for studying the company's design heritage, business model, and cultural impact.

Planning to convert the original IKEA store into a museum began after the store relocated to a new location in Älmhult in 2012. The original target opening was 2015, though the museum ultimately opened on 30 June 2016, fifty-eight years to the day after the first store's inauguration. The conversion was overseen by the British architecture firm Wilkinson Eyre, exhibition design specialists Ralph Appelbaum Associates, and local architect Uulas Arkitekter. In 2024, IKEA acquired the defunct Museum of Furniture Studies, previously located in Stockholm, and relocated it to Älmhult, broadening the museum's institutional scope beyond the company's own history to encompass wider furniture studies.

The museum's permanent exhibitions are organized into four main sections: Our Roots, Democratic Design, IKEA Through the Ages, and The Many Sides of Ingvar Kamprad. These trace the company's origins in Småland, its design philosophy and manufacturing processes, its product evolution across decades, and the biography of its founder. The museum also maintains temporary exhibitions that rotate on an annual basis. The collection encompasses approximately 9,500 items and 52 decorated rooms, presented as the largest IKEA range display in the world. The museum additionally preserves and provides digital access to a complete archive of IKEA catalogues through its website. Interactive design activities and visitor-submitted stories about iconic products, such as the Billy bookcase and Klippan sofa, form part of the presentation.

The museum's signature feature is its comprehensive chronological display of IKEA products across eras, realized through the 52 room settings. A distinctive architectural element within the museum is a 1700 m2 greenhouse space filled with plants and seasonal products. The collection's strength lies in its completeness as a corporate archive rather than in individual masterpieces, offering researchers and visitors access to the full trajectory of IKEA's democratic design approach, from material selection to finished furniture. The digital catalogue archive constitutes a significant research resource in its own right.

The museum occupies the building of the first IKEA store, which opened in 1958. The original facade, designed by Swedish architect Claes Knutson, was restored to recreate its 1958 appearance during the conversion. The roof was replaced with the addition of a roof lantern. The building provides 3500 m2 of exhibition and public space, more than quadrupling the area of the previous IKEA Through the Ages exhibition. The IKEA Hotell, which opened in 1964, stands directly across the street from the museum, creating a cluster of historic IKEA sites in this part of Älmhult.

The IKEA Museum is located in Älmhult Municipality in southern Sweden and is owned by IKEA. It operates as a public-facing institution with a shop offering museum-exclusive design objects and a restaurant-cafe serving IKEA's signature meatballs.
