Jakob Smitsmuseum

The Jakob Smitsmuseum is a municipal museum in Mol, a municipality in the province of Antwerp, Belgium. Established in 1977, it is dedicated to preserving and exhibiting the work of the Dutch-Flemish painter Jakob Smits and other artists associated with the Molse School, a regional artistic movement. The museum occupies a converted former presbytery in the hamlet of Sluis and serves as the primary institutional custodian of Smits's legacy and the broader artistic heritage of the Kempen region.

The idea of assembling Jakob Smits's works into a dedicated collection originated with Ernest Van den Bossche, author of the biography La vie et l'oeuvre de Jakob Smits, who first expressed this wish in 1935. In 1949, the artist's widow attempted to bequeath the Malvinahof, where the couple had resided, along with Smits's artworks to the province of Antwerp, but the province declined. Following her death, the Malvinahof was sold and demolished. The municipality of Mol began acquiring works by Smits in the early 1970s, and a 1975 exhibition showcased the municipal holdings. The former presbytery of Mol-Sluis, a neo-Renaissance building from 1892 designed by architect P.J. Taeymans, was renovated to house the collection, and the museum opened to the public in 1977. An extension was added in 1996, creating additional space for works by other painters of the Molse School.

The museum's holdings center on Jakob Smits and the Molse School, a circle of artists active in and around Mol. The collection comprises approximately twenty paintings, eighty drawings, and ninety etchings by Smits himself, alongside thirty paintings, twenty-five drawings, and one hundred fifty etchings by other Molse School artists. The museum also holds works by related artists who painted in the Kempen region around 1900. The collection is organized across the building's three floors: the ground floor displays works by Molse School artists and hosts temporary exhibitions, the first floor is reserved for Smits's paintings and drawings, and the attic houses his etchings.

Among the Molse School artists represented in the collection are Willem Battaille, Dirk Baksteen, Charles Claessens, Gaston De Biemme, and Paula Van Rompa-Zenke. The museum also holds works by Adolphe Hamesse and other affiliated artists who worked in the Kempen region circa 1900. While the collection emphasizes Smits's own output across painting, drawing, and printmaking, the inclusion of these associated figures documents the broader artistic community that developed in this rural Belgian region during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

The museum is housed in the former presbytery of Sluis, a hamlet within the municipality of Mol. The building is a neo-Renaissance structure dating from 1892, designed by architect P.J. Taeymans. It contains seven exhibition rooms distributed across three floors. The 1996 extension added a new wing to accommodate expanded holdings of Molse School artists.
