Jordan National Gallery of Fine Arts

The Jordan National Gallery of Fine Arts is a major contemporary art museum located in the Jabal al-Luweibdeh neighborhood of Amman, Jordan. Founded in 1980 by the Royal Society of Fine Arts, the institution serves as a primary center for modern and contemporary visual arts, with a distinct focus on artists from developing countries in Asia and Africa. Its permanent collection comprises over 2000 works across diverse media, including paintings, prints, sculptures, photographs, installations, weavings, and ceramics, created by more than 800 artists from 59 countries.

The museum was established on February 19, 1980, by the Royal Society of Fine Arts, with the involvement of artist and art theorist Wijdan, starting with an initial 77 works. The official inauguration took place under the patronage of the late King Hussein and Queen Noor Al Hussein. In subsequent years, the institution expanded its reach through specialized exhibitions and outreach projects. On May 18, 2009, marking International Museum Day, the gallery launched a touring museum project under the patronage of Princess Rajwa Bint Ali, president of the Royal Society of Fine Arts, to introduce the artistic movement to villages and provinces across the kingdom. Later, on May 21, 2013, under the patronage of Queen Rania Al Abdullah, the Royal Society of Fine Arts organized the largest art exhibition in Jordan to date, titled 70 Years of Jordanian Contemporary Art. This exhibition displayed over 200 works by 195 Jordanian artists and was accompanied by a catalog documenting biographical information and a chronological history of the Jordanian art movement.

The permanent collection is distinguished by its international scope, emphasizing the artistic output of developing nations in Asia and Africa. It features works by artists from 59 countries, spanning Algeria, Armenia, Australia, Bahrain, Denmark, Egypt, France, Ghana, India, Indonesia, Iran, Iraq, Italy, Japan, Jordan, Kabardino Balkaria, Kuwait, Kyrgyzstan, Lebanon, Libya, Malaysia, Malta, Mongolia, Morocco, the Netherlands, Nigeria, Oman, Pakistan, Palestine, Papua New Guinea, Peru, the Philippines, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Senegal, Spain, Sudan, Switzerland, Syria, Taiwan, Tajikistan, Thailand, Tunisia, Turkey, Turkmenistan, the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom, the United States, Uzbekistan, Yemen, and the Former Republic of Yugoslavia. The media represented encompass paintings, prints, sculptures, photographs, installations, weavings, and ceramics.

Among the more than 800 artists represented in the permanent collection are Hakeem al-Aqel, Larissa Sansour, Mukaram Hakhandouqa, Abdel Raouf Shamoun, Fahrelnissa Zeid, Salam Kan'an, Ghassan Abu Laban, Laila Hajbi, Ibrahim Najjar, and Jamal Ashour. The 2013 exhibition 70 Years of Jordanian Contemporary Art also highlighted a significant cross-section of the gallery's Jordanian holdings, showcasing over 200 works across painting, sculpture, video art, photography, graphic arts, ceramics, and installations by 195 Jordanian artists from different generations, providing a comprehensive visual documentation of the country's art history.

The museum is situated in the Jabal al-Luweibdeh area of Amman. The building underwent a major renovation and expansion under the direction of Jordanian architect Mohamed al-Asad. This architectural project was recognized internationally, receiving the Aga Khan Award for Architecture in 2007. Despite the physical improvements to the facility, a 2013 article in the Neue Zurcher Zeitung criticized the museum for a complete absence of gallery texts or mediation aimed at helping visitors understand the works on display.

The Jordan National Gallery of Fine Arts is located in Amman, Jordan, and operates under the administration of the Royal Society of Fine Arts. In addition to its permanent displays, the institution actively engages in cultural outreach, notably through its touring museum project initiated in 2009. This pioneering program brings original works from the permanent collection, alongside workshops and lectures by specialized artists and academics, to remote areas of the country, beginning with its inaugural exhibition at the Al Yazedieh secondary school for girls in the province of Salt.
