Overview
Kremsmünster Abbey, known in German as Stift Kremsmünster, is a Benedictine monastery located in the town of Kremsmünster in Upper Austria. Founded in 777 AD by Tassilo III, Duke of Bavaria, it stands as one of the oldest and most significant monastic institutions in the German-speaking world. The abbey has served for over twelve centuries as a spiritual, educational, and cultural center for the region, distinguished by its extensive baroque architecture, renowned library, astronomical observatory, and active monastic community. Since 1625 it has been a member of the Austrian Congregation within the Benedictine Confederation, and it continues to function as a living monastery with associated pastoral and educational activities.
Founding & history
According to legend, Tassilo III established the abbey on the site where his son Gunther was fatally wounded by a wild boar during a hunt. The foundation charter was issued on 9 November 777, with Bishop Virgil of Salzburg, Bishop Simpert of Regensburg, Bishop Waldrich of Passau, and abbots from Mondsee, Niederalteich, Schlehdorf, and Chiemsee in attendance. The first abbot, Fateric, brought a colony of monks from Lower Bavaria, and the new foundation received generous endowments from Tassilo as well as from Charlemagne and his successors. The abbey was destroyed in the 10th century, during the Hungarian incursions, and was later restored under Emperor Henry II with Saint Gotthard as abbot. A period of decline was reversed in the 11th century when Bishop Altmann of Passau introduced the reformed observance of Cluny, after which the abbey became, in the words of an anonymous chronicler, one of the most flourishing houses in Germany, excelling in observance, piety, lands, buildings, books, paintings, and learning. The abbey survived the Reformation through the efforts of abbots Ulrich Schoppenzaun (1454-1484) and Johann Schreiner (1505-1524), though Abbot Weiner (1558-1565) briefly introduced Protestant doctrines before succeeding abbots restored Catholic practice. Abbot Anton Wolfradt (1613-1639) became known as the abbey's third founder for bringing it to renewed flourishing, and his successor Placid Buchauer (1644-1669) further enhanced its reputation for studies. Abbot Alexander Fixlmillner (1731-1759) built the great observatory and constructed roads on the monastic estate; his nephew Placidus Fixlmillner later became the first astronomer to compute the orbit of Uranus and directed the observatory. The abbey narrowly escaped closure under Emperor Joseph II's secularization policies in the late 18th century, suffered heavily during the Napoleonic Wars, and recovered its prestige under Abbot Thomas Mitterndorfer (1840-1860). Abbot Cölestin Ganglbauer, who celebrated the 1100th anniversary of the foundation in 1877, became Archbishop of Vienna in 1881 and was raised to the cardinalate in 1884. The entomologist Leander Czerny served as abbot from 1905 to 1929. On 8 May 1945, the abbey was the site where the exiled Slovak government capitulated to General Walton Walker of the XX Corps, 3rd US Army, marking the end of World War II in that theater. From 1970 to 2010, monks from Kremsmünster worked in the Diocese of Barreiras in Brazil, where P. Richard Weberberger became the first bishop of the newly established diocese, serving until his death on 17 August 2010. As of 25 January 2025, the abbot is P. Bernhard Eckerstorfer, formerly rector of the Pontifical Athenaeum Sant'Anselmo.
Collection scope
The abbey's collections span multiple domains reflecting its long history as a center of learning and art. The monastic library was historically famous and drew eminent scholars to Kremsmünster, where several important historical works were written, including histories of the bishops of Passau and of the dukes of Bavaria, as well as the abbey's own chronicles. The library holds more than 160,000 old bindings and 2,000 incunabula. Among its most significant manuscripts are the Codex Millenarius, a Carolingian manuscript of the four Gospels on more than 700 folios measuring 31 by 22 centimeters, and the Speculum Humanae Salvationis (Codex Cremifanensis 243). The abbey also preserves the celebrated Tassilo Chalice, its most famous and precious work of art, donated by Tassilo I. The observatory, located in the Mathematical Tower, contains an interesting collection of natural history objects in its lower eight stories, which also feature a series of fish-tanks decorated with statues and a colonnade.
Notable holdings
The abbey church, dedicated to Christ the Saviour and Saint Agapitus of Praeneste, contains notable artistic works from several periods. The high altar, created by Johann Andreas Wolf in 1712 after twelve years of design and preparation, features a painting of the Transfiguration measuring 6.3 by 3.8 meters, depicting Christ elevated with Moses and Elijah, surrounded by angels, with God the Father above and the three apostles below. The heavy gilded copper frame is supported by angels of mediocre quality by Josef Anton Pfaffinger (1714). The Baroque angels by Johann Michael Zürn the Younger, kneeling and standing at the numerous side altars, are regarded as impressive examples of the Austrian Baroque. The church also contains the celebrated Grave of Gunther, a cenotaph commemorating Tassilo's son. The choir is separated from the nave by grilles: the central grille was decorated by Valentin Hofmann in 1718, while the lateral grilles are the work of Hans Walz from 1616-1618. The west facade of the church dates from 1681 and was executed by Girolamo Alfieri. The interior frescoes depicting scenes from the Old and New Testaments were painted by the Grabenberger brothers of Krems, with Michael Christoph particularly distinguished.
Building & site
From the middle of the 17th century, an extensive construction program largely reusing older building materials expanded the premises so that they became second in size only to Melk in all of Austria. The principal architects were Jakob Prandtauer, who also designed Melk Abbey, and Carlo Antonio Carlone. The complex reaches its greatest extent in the south wing, approximately 290 meters long, which houses the refectory, the library, and the Emperor's Hall. The south wing terminates to the east in the Mathematical Tower, 51 meters high, which contains the Kremsmünster Observatory and is considered one of Austria's first high-rise structures. The abbey church, begun in 1232 and consecrated in 1277 by Abbot Friedrich von Aich on the 500th anniversary of the foundation, was originally constructed in late Romanesque and early Gothic styles. Its completion, including the towers, took another two centuries. From 1613 onward, the church was remodeled in Baroque style, with the interior redecorated between 1680 and 1720 to designs by Carlo Antonio Carlone, Giovanni Battista Colomba, and Giovanni Battista Barberini. The church measures 78 meters in length and 21 meters in width, with a central nave height of 18 meters and side nave height of 12 meters.
Visiting
Kremsmünster Abbey is located in the town of Kremsmünster in Upper Austria, within the Diocese of Linz. The abbey remains an active Benedictine community; as of April 2026, it comprises 36 monks, of whom 35 have made solemn profession, plus one oblate. The monks work within the monastery, at the affiliated Stiftsgymnasium, in youth pastoral care at the Treffpunkt Benedikt, and in 27 parishes, one expositure, and one chaplaincy. The daily life of the community follows the Benedictine principle of ora et labora, structured by the monastic liturgy of the hours. Men may also enter the monastery for a temporary period. The Mathematical Tower with its observatory, the historic library, and the abbey church with its Baroque interiors constitute the principal features accessible to visitors.
