Kunsthalle Praha

Kunsthalle Praha is a private museum of contemporary art in Prague, Czech Republic, that opened in February 2022. Housed in a repurposed former electrical transformer station below Prague Castle, the institution was established by the Pudil Family Foundation to promote understanding and appreciation of Czech and international modern and contemporary art. With a collection exceeding 2,000 works and approximately 5,700 square metres of floor space, it functions as both a public museum and a platform for international artistic exchange. The Bulgarian Ivana Goossen serves as director and CEO of the Kunsthalle Praha Foundation.

The museum emerged from the collecting activity of Pavlina and Petr Pudil, who in 2016 decided to convert a recently acquired historic building into a public art museum through their non-profit Pudil Family Foundation. The foundation purchased the structure via a real estate joint-stock company owned by the couple. Following a complete gutting that preserved only the original perimeter walls, the Prague-based project office Schindler Seko Architekti s.r.o. carried out the conversion and extension. The reconstruction was awarded the Czech National Architecture Award 2022 on 31 October 2022. Since opening, the Pudils have shifted their collecting strategy toward a public model emphasising acquisitions, partnerships, and long-term loans, with a focus on conservation, research, and presentation.

The collection is built around the long-term loan of the Pudil Family Foundation holdings and is described as a living, evolving body of work. Its thematic focus falls on significant historical movements and tendencies of the 20th and 21st centuries in Central Europe, placed within an international context. The museum actively acquires works by established and emerging Central European artists and seeks to discover artistic trends and periods that are underrepresented or little known in the Czech Republic. Beyond the core Pudil holdings, the institution has acquired the collection of Maria and Milan Knížák, a major assembly of Fluxus movement works, and the private collection of Eva and Petr Zeman.

The most prominently documented acquisitions include the Knížák collection, representing a significant body of Fluxus material, and the Zeman private collection. The overall holdings exceed 2,000 works. The museum's programme of temporary exhibitions has included Kinetismus: 100 Years of Electricity in Art (2022), Gregor Hildebrandt: A Blink of an Eye and the Years are Behind Us (2022/2023), BOHEMIA: History of an Idea, 1950-2000 (2023/2024), Elmgreen & Dragset: READ (2023/2024), Chiharu Shiota: The Unsettled Soul (2024/2025), and Roman Ondak: The Day After Yesterday (2025/2026).

The museum occupies the former Zenger Transformation Station in Prague's Malá Strana district, situated below Prague Castle. The neoclassical building was constructed between 1930 and 1931 by the City of Prague Electricity Works to designs by architect Vilém Kvasnička, replacing a former barracks on the site. It was named after Václav Zenger, physicist, meteorologist, and professor at the Czech Technical University in Prague. The Czech Ministry of Culture declared it a cultural monument in April 2015. The conversion retained only the original perimeter walls of this protected structure while creating three gallery spaces, educational venues, and public facilities.

Kunsthalle Praha is located in central Prague and is privately owned and operated under the Pudil Family Foundation. The museum offers free educational tours and interactive workshops for students at all levels, funded through the foundation. Public programmes include courses in art history and theory: Art 101, conducted in English, and TransformArt, conducted in Czech. Visitor facilities encompass a rooftop terrace with a viewing café, a booklounge, and a design shop. The museum collaborates with non-profit organisations in the United States and Great Britain to facilitate artist and curator residencies, reinforcing its role as a platform for international exchange.
