Kunsthalle Weishaupt

Kunsthalle Weishaupt is a private art museum in Ulm, Baden-Württemberg, Germany, dedicated to modern and contemporary art. Opened in 2007, it houses one of the region's most significant private collections of modern art, assembled over five decades by entrepreneur and patron Siegfried Weishaupt. The institution occupies a prominent position in the city center near Ulm Minster and serves as both a public museum and a showcase for a collection that spans color-field painting, Pop Art, ZERO group works, and hard-edge abstraction.

The Weishaupt collection comprises more than 400 paintings and sculptures, with drawings, graphics, and works on paper held in addition to this core holding. Siegfried Weishaupt has described the acquisition approach as intuitive rather than concept-driven, guided by personal response rather than a predetermined program. The collection's particular strengths lie in three major areas: American and international color-field painting of the 1960s, including major representatives of the movement; works by the Düsseldorf-based ZERO group and the artists who influenced it; and hard-edge painting. The opening exhibition, titled "Einfach Sehen" (Simply Seeing), presented approximately 70 works by 50 artists as a cross-section of the collection. The Weishaupt collection is recognized as one of the important private collections of modern art in Baden-Württemberg, alongside those of Frieder Burda, Reinhold Würth, Friedrich E. Rentschler, Josef Froehlich, the Grässlin family, and the Museum Ritter.

The collection includes significant works from the 1950s and 1960s by major figures of modern art. Among Pop Art and related movements, it holds works by Roy Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol, Willem de Kooning, and Keith Haring. Warhol also produced a portrait of Max Weishaupt, the company founder. The color-field painting holdings are especially deep, encompassing Mark Rothko, Ad Reinhardt, Frank Stella, Agnes Martin, Morris Louis, and Kenneth Noland. The ZERO group and its circle are represented through Heinz Mack, Otto Piene, Günther Uecker, and Pol Bury, with additional works by influential predecessors and associates including Lucio Fontana, Piero Manzoni, and Enrico Castellani. Hard-edge painting appears through Josef Albers. The collection also extends to more recent and diverse practices with works by Imi Knoebel, Günther Förg, Markus Oehlen, Robert Longo, Yves Klein, Barry Flanagan, John Armleder, Nam June Paik, Jean Tinguely, John Chamberlain, François Morellet, Maurizio Nannucci, Keith Sonnier, Hans Arp, and Erich Hauser.

The Kunsthalle Weishaupt building was constructed from 2005 to 2007 on Hans-und-Sophie-Scholl-Platz as part of the "Ulm Neue Mitte" urban renewal project. The site had been rebuilt after World War II bombing with architecture and street layouts now considered of limited urban planning value. The overall "Neue Mitte Ulm" project, with the Kunsthalle as its culminating element, received the German Urban Development Prize (Deutscher Städtebaupreis) in 2006 in the "Auszeichnung" category, with the Kunsthalle building already taken into account in the award. Siegfried Weishaupt commissioned the Munich architectural office of Wolfram Wöhr, a pupil of New York architect Richard Meier, without competition or public tender. The building's design and its glazed connecting corridor to the adjacent Museum Ulm have been controversial among sections of the Ulm public. The city of Ulm provided the land for the museum and pays for building maintenance staff, while Weishaupt covered all construction costs. Under the agreement, admission fees go to the city, and the Kunsthalle will pass entirely into municipal ownership after 66 years.
