Kunsthalle Zürich

The Kunsthalle Zürich is a contemporary art exhibition centre in Zürich, Switzerland, founded in 1985. Located on Limmatstrasse near the city centre, it operates as a kunsthalle, a non-collecting institution dedicated to temporary exhibitions of international contemporary art. Run by the Verein Kunsthalle Zürich, it attracts approximately 22,000 visitors annually and is counted among the 100 most important exhibition houses worldwide.

The Verein Kunsthalle Zürich was established in 1985, though exhibition activity remained sporadic until 1986. The institution gained a permanent foothold in 1989 when it moved to the Schoeller-Areal on the Limmat, a former textile dyeing works where industrial production had ceased in 1988. Under director and curator Bernhard Bürgi, the Kunsthalle opened its first regular exhibition season there in autumn 1989. In May 1996, the institution relocated to its current home in the Löwenbräuareal, a former brewery. Architects Christian Karrer and Andreas Fuhrimann initially converted the building, and the Swiss architecture firm Gigon/Guyer later expanded it with an additional floor, completed in 2012. Leadership has passed through three directors: Beatrix Ruf directed from 2001 to October 2014, Daniel Baumann succeeded her from 2014 to 2024, and Fanny Hauser assumed the directorship in early 2025. The Gilbert & George exhibition in 2020 was closed prematurely due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

As a kunsthalle, the Kunsthalle Zürich does not maintain a permanent collection. Its programme centres on temporary exhibitions, lecture series, guided tours, art trips, and film programmes devoted to the presentation and mediation of international contemporary art. The institution shows both emerging artists whose positions remain unestablished and internationally recognised figures. A project space hosts experimental manifestations and smaller exhibitions. The Kunsthalle produces accompanying catalogues that deepen information on individual artists or thematic connections, and it frequently collaborates with international partners.

Notable solo exhibitions since 1992 have included Andreas Gursky's first Swiss solo show in 1992; Charles Ray's sculptures in 1994; Wolfgang Tillmans's photography in 1995 and again in 2012 with Neue Welt; Gabriel Orozco in 1996; Thomas Demand in 1998; Steve McQueen in 1999; Neo Rauch's first Swiss solo exhibition in 2001; John Armleder's first overview of works on paper in 2004; Sarah Lucas's first retrospective in 2004; Laura Owens in 2006; Nicole Eisenman's first European exhibition in 2007; Liam Gillick's retrospective in 2008; Sturtevant's Image Over Image in 2012; Lutz Bacher's Snow in 2013; and Gilbert & George's The Great Exhibition, 1971-2016 in 2020. International collaborations have included Keren Cytter with the Frankfurter Kunstverein in 2005, Peter Doig with Museum Ludwig Cologne in 2005, Terence Koh with the Whitney Museum in 2006, General Idea with Kunstverein München in 2006, and Allora & Calzadilla with the Art Institute of Chicago in 2007.

The Kunsthalle Zürich occupies the Löwenbräuareal on Limmatstrasse, near Zürich's city centre. The building is a converted former brewery. The initial conversion was carried out by architects Christian Karrer and Andreas Fuhrimann, and the Swiss architecture office Gigon/Guyer later expanded the structure with an additional floor, which entered service in 2012. The Löwenbräu-Areal has developed into a centre for contemporary art in Zürich, housing alongside the Kunsthalle the Migros Museum für Gegenwartskunst, the Edition VFO, and several private galleries including Galerie Hauser & Wirth.

The Kunsthalle Zürich is located at Limmatstrasse 270 in Zürich, Switzerland. It is owned and operated by the Verein Kunsthalle Zürich, an association founded in 1985 that had 880 members and 180 patrons as of 2008. The publisher and art collector Michael Ringier serves as president. The institution receives substantial support from the City of Zürich and private sponsors. Members enjoy free entry to numerous art halls and museums in Switzerland for a moderate contribution.
