McNay Art Museum

The McNay Art Museum is an art museum located in San Antonio, Texas. Founded in 1954, it holds the distinction of being the first modern art museum in the state. The institution focuses primarily on 19th- and 20th-century European and American art, and its campus encompasses a 23-acre estate that includes a Japanese-inspired garden and fishpond. Today, the museum's collection comprises over 20,000 objects, making it one of the finest collections of contemporary art and sculpture in the Southwestern United States.

The museum originated from the bequest of Marion Koogler McNay, an American painter and art teacher. Born in Ohio, Marion Koogler arrived in San Antonio in 1918 after marrying Sergeant Don McNay, who died later that year during a flu epidemic. She inherited a substantial oil fortune upon the death of her father. In 1926, she married prominent ophthalmologist Donald T. Atkinson, though the marriage ended in 1936 and she resumed the McNay name. Marion began collecting art of the 19th and 20th centuries, and upon her death in 1950, she left more than 700 artworks, most of her fortune, and her estate to the City of San Antonio to establish the museum. The institution opened to the public in 1954.

While initially formed around Marion McNay's bequest of late 19th- and early 20th-century European and American modernist works, the museum's holdings have expanded significantly over the decades. The collection now includes galleries of medieval and Renaissance artwork alongside its larger collection of modern pieces. Beyond fine art, the museum houses the Tobin Collection of Theatre Arts, recognized as one of the premiere collections of its kind in the United States. Additionally, the institution maintains a research library containing over 30,000 volumes.

The museum's collection features works by prominent European and American artists, including Paul Cezanne, Pablo Picasso, Paul Gauguin, Henri Matisse, Georgia O'Keeffe, Diego Rivera, Mary Cassatt, and Edward Hopper. Specific notable works in the collection include Paul Cezanne's Portrait d'Henri Gasquet, Paul Gauguin's Eve bretonne and Autoportrait a l'idole, Edward Hopper's Corn Hill, Henri Matisse's La Blouse rouge, Vincent van Gogh's Deux Femmes a travers champs, and El Greco's Tete du Christ.

The museum is centered on Marion Koogler McNay's 24-room Spanish Colonial Revival-style mansion, which she commissioned in 1927. The residence was designed by architects Atlee Ayres and his son Robert M. Ayres. The 23-acre grounds are landscaped with fountains, broad lawns, and a Japanese-inspired garden and fishpond. In 2008, the museum added the Jane and Arthur Stieren Center for Exhibitions, a 45,000-square-foot structure designed by architect Jean-Paul Viguier to display the Modern collection. The center's design, materials, and architectural details contrast with and complement the original residence, which it adjoins. The new wing houses light-filled galleries for special exhibitions, a glass-fronted gallery for sculpture, a gallery for paper works, wall cases for small objects, a lecture hall, and learning centers.
