Medellín Museum of Modern Art

MAMM's collection now numbers approximately 2,400 works, with the majority created by Colombian artists since 1950. The institution's founding mission to serve as a forum for contemporary artistic expression in Medellín has shaped a collection that is deeply rooted in local and national production while maintaining international connections. The holdings span modern and contemporary practices, with particular strength in work by artists associated with the Antioquia region. Beyond painting and sculpture, the collection encompasses printmaking, photography, video installation, and other media. The museum has also assembled the Portafolios AGPA (Artes Gráficas Panamericanas), a significant collection of prints by thirty artists from various countries across the Americas. In 2004, the Colombian Ministry of Culture designated the Débora Arango collection as Bienes de Interés Cultural de Orden Nacional, recognizing its exceptional cultural importance. The museum's programming philosophy, as articulated by its leadership, emphasizes maintaining an international outlook while remaining connected to local surroundings and communities. Temporary exhibitions have ranged from monographic shows of major international figures such as Dan Flavin, William Kentridge, and Sophie Calle to deeply local projects like the 2022 exhibition Tiempo para escucharnos, which presented work by Colombia's indigenous communities in collaboration with the artists themselves.

MAMM's current home is one of the most architecturally distinctive museum buildings in Latin America, resulting from the adaptive reuse of the Talleres Robledo steel plant combined with substantial new construction. The original industrial structure, built in 1938, has been carefully preserved and integrated with contemporary architectural elements. The 2015 expansion, designed by 57STUDIO from Chile in collaboration with the local firm Villegas Editores, added a striking multi-storey structure that rises above the surrounding park. The design features what has been described as a series of concrete boxes stacked and rotated one atop another, creating a distinctive geometric silhouette. The façade combines dark perforated metal panels with large windows that modulate light and shadow throughout the day. Inside, high ceilings and expansive open-plan galleries provide flexible spaces for diverse exhibition needs, from monumental installations to intimate photographic series. The architectural approach maintains visible traces of the building's industrial past, exposed steel beams, weathered brick, raw concrete, while introducing sleek contemporary materials and forms. This dialogue between historical and new elements embodies the museum's role in Medellín's transformation from industrial center to cultural destination. The complex includes three main exhibition halls, an experimental space, a cinema, and commercial areas.

The Medellín Museum of Modern Art is located at Carrera 44 N° 19A, 100 in the Ciudad del Río district of southern Medellín. The museum is open Tuesday through Friday from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., and Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. It is closed on Mondays and on Tuesdays following public holidays. Admission for non-resident foreigners is 30,000 Colombian pesos; discounted rates apply for adults over 60, children under 12, and students with identification. Children under 6 enter free, as do members of the Amigos MAMM program and visitors with disabilities presenting appropriate identification. The museum is accessible by Medellín's Metro system: the closest station is Industriales on Line A, from which visitors walk south along Avenida Los Industriales. Bus routes also serve Avenida Las Vegas, and the public bicycle system EnCicla reaches Ciudad del Río. The museum offers free guided tours with trained mediators and volunteers, and bilingual Spanish-English descriptions are posted at gallery entrances. On-site parking is available with rates of 5,200 pesos per hour for vehicles and 2,900 for motorcycles; bicycle parking is free. The museum shop operates Monday 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Tuesday through Sunday 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. (6:00 p.m. on weekends and holidays). The MAMM library is open Monday and Saturday 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Tuesday through Friday 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., closed Sundays and holidays.
