Mucha Museum

The Mucha Museum is a museum in Prague, Czech Republic, dedicated to the work of Art Nouveau figure Alphonse Mucha. Located in the New Town district, it is operated by the Mucha Foundation, the artist's family organization. The institution serves as the primary venue for the foundation's collection, housing significant works by Mucha and acting as the authoritative exhibition space for his art in the city.

The Mucha Foundation previously operated a museum in Kounice Palace starting in 1998. Over time, the size of the old premises caused crowding issues, prompting the foundation to seek a larger location. In May 2024, the Mucha Foundation fully cut ties with the director of the Kounice Palace site, Sebastian Pawlowski, terminating their contract over alleged unpaid debts of several million koruna and concerns that the paintings were kept in damaging conditions. The foundation declared any subsequent exhibitions at the Kounice Palace unauthorized, triggering intellectual property disputes over the museum's name. The foundation maintained that Pawlowski was breaking the law by continuing to use it, while Pawlowski argued the new venue had no right to the original name. The foundation relocated its collection to the historic Savarin Palace, a space double the size of the previous site. The new museum opened on February 14, 2025, after several delays.

The collection comprises works by Alphonse Mucha, spanning his role as a major figure in Art Nouveau. The holdings include notable examples of his decorative and fine art, ranging from commercial posters to later patriotic works. The museum's inaugural exhibition, titled Art Nouveau and Utopia, was overseen by Eva Jiřičná and designed by Tomoko Sato. The foundation intends to eventually expand the collection's scope to accommodate The Slav Epic, a cycle of large format paintings realized between 1910 and 1928.

Signature works in the museum's collection include Princess Hyacinth, the Seasons cycle, and Zodiac. Additional notable holdings feature The Madonna of the Lilies, dated 1905, and Song of Bohemia, dated 1918. These works were previously deposited at the former Kounice Palace location and have since been recovered by the Mucha Foundation for display at the new site.

The museum is situated within a section of the historic Savarin Palace, also identified as the Sylva-Taroucca Palace, in Prague. The broader palace complex underwent renovation by real estate developer Crestyl, under the leadership of architect Thomas Heatherwick. The specific section occupied by the Mucha Museum was remodeled by Czech architect Eva Jiřičná to accommodate the gallery's needs.
