Museo Bellapart

The Museo Bellapart is a free private art museum in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, located at the corner of Avenida John F. Kennedy. Founded in 1999 by Catalan businessman Juan José Bellapart, it occupies the fifth floor of a building above a Honda car dealership. It is regarded as the first private museum in the Dominican Republic and a key reference point for Dominican art, distinguished by being entirely devoted to Dominican artists. The museum remains under the ownership of the Bellapart family following Juan José Bellapart's death in 2020.

Juan José Bellapart, a Catalan businessman, established the museum and opened it to the public on 18 February 1999. The building was designed by Dominican architect Leopoldo Franco. The collection itself had its origins in the Bellapart family's private collecting activities, which began in the 1960s. After Juan José Bellapart's death in 2020, the family retained ownership of the collection and continued its operation. The museum has maintained its mission of educating visitors about Dominican heritage and culture through art, and has developed educational programming including museology courses and art workshops for children.

The permanent collection encompasses more than 2,000 works spanning from the mid-19th century to the 1960s, covering four principal categories of fine arts: paintings, sculptures, engravings, and drawings. The holdings are arranged chronologically within the museum galleries. The collection was carefully curated from the family's private holdings with the specific aim of teaching visitors about Dominican heritage and culture. Beyond its permanent holdings, the museum organizes temporary exhibitions, including shows highlighting artists who fled the Franco dictatorship and those who were exiled in the Dominican Republic during the Spanish Civil War.
