Overview

The Museo del Monte San Michele is an immersive history museum located atop Monte San Michele in Sagrado, within the regional decentralization entity of Gorizia in northeastern Italy. Dedicated to the events of the First World War along the Italian-Austrian front, the museum occupies a site declared a National Monument Zone in 1922 in recognition of the battles that took place across this Karst terrain. Through interactive multimedia and virtual reality technologies, the institution conveys both information and emotional engagement with one of the most contested sectors of the Great War.

Founding & history

Monte San Michele was declared a Monumental War Zone in 1922, establishing the area's protected status as testimony to the events of the Great War. The site is owned by State Public Property and administered by the Ministry of Defence, Office for the Protection of Defence Culture and Memory. In 2016, management of the area was entrusted to the Municipality of Sagrado, which undertook to preserve its memory and increase public interest in the location. A significant transformation came in 2018, when the museum was refurbished through collaboration with the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Gorizia as part of the goGreen project, reimagining the institution with innovative digital and immersive technologies.

Collection scope

The museum's holdings and programming center on the military history of the Italian-Austrian front, particularly the Karst sector and the Lower Isonzo front. Rather than a traditional object-based collection, the institution's strength lies in experiential and digital interpretation. Two touch screens form the core of the indoor exhibition: an interactive table with thematic maps illustrating the evolution of the front during the war years, both in the Gorizia area and at the European level, and a second screen presenting a three-dimensional reconstruction of the Cima 3 gunboat gallery, allowing virtual exploration of its tunnels. The museum's approach prioritizes emotional transmission alongside historical information, using immersive tools to evoke the experiences of those who lived through the conflict.

Notable holdings

The museum's signature experiential elements include the VR 360 Room, equipped with 15 workstations with headsets and viewers, where visitors can witness scenes of trench life, listen to war correspondents' accounts, relive the gas attack of 29 June 1916, and experience an overflight of the Doberdò Plateau aboard a Spad XIII aircraft piloted by Francesco Baracca. The Cima 3 gunner gallery, constructed between October 1916 and June 1917 for defensive purposes and later serving as tactical command headquarters of the Italian Third Army, is accessible through augmented reality. The Lukachich cave, named after General Lukachich, is also rendered through 3D reconstruction. The outdoor museum area, which is free and always accessible, includes trenches and additional AR-activated points.

Building & site

The museum is situated at the summit of Monte San Michele, at Via Zona Sacra, within the sacred area that has been protected since 1922. The physical site encompasses both indoor exhibition spaces and extensive outdoor terrain, including the Cima 3 gunner gallery and the Lukachich cave. The gunner gallery itself was carved beneath Cima 3 for defensive purposes and today serves as a focal point for augmented reality interpretation. The outdoor monumental zone covers the mountain landscape where some of the fiercest fighting of the Isonzo front occurred, with visitor pathways connecting the various fortified elements and trench remains.

Visiting

The museum is located at Via Zona Sacra, c/o cima del Monte San Michele, 34078 Sagrado (GO). It can be contacted at museosanmichele@coopthiel.it or by telephone at 0481 92002. Visitors are advised to verify opening hours by contacting the structure directly. The outdoor museum is free and always visitable, while indoor immersive experiences and AR content at the gunner gallery and Lukachich cave require a museum ticket. The San Michele VR mobile app provides augmented reality content both within the Cima 3 gunboat and at designated points along the outdoor itinerary, activated by framing AR tags with a smartphone camera to reveal 3D holograms and audio testimonies.
