Museo Torres García

The Museo Torres García is an art museum in the Ciudad Vieja historic district of Montevideo, Uruguay, dedicated to the work of painter, writer, and teacher Joaquín Torres García. Founded to preserve the artist's legacy following his death in 1949, the institution holds a comprehensive collection of his paintings, drawings, manuscripts, and personal archives. It operates under the private, non-profit Fundación Torres García and serves as a cultural center that combines exhibition space with educational workshops, a library, and a theater, drawing over 85,000 visitors annually.

Following Joaquín Torres García's death in 1949, his widow, Manolita Piña, led family and associates in creating a museum to preserve his oeuvre and documentary archive. The institution first opened on July 28, 1955, in a building provided by the Concejo Departamental at Avenida 18 de Julio 1903. In 1967, the museum relocated to the basement of the Ateneo de Montevideo, sharing the site with the Taller Torres García, but closed in 1975 during the civic-military dictatorship. In 1986, Manolita Piña and her children Augusto and Olimpia formally established the Fundación Torres García to oversee the collection. An agreement between the Generalitat de Catalunya and the Uruguayan state facilitated the acquisition of a new building, allowing the museum to reopen on Sarandí street in 1990. Olimpia Torres Piña later presided over the foundation until her death in 2007, and Alejandro Díaz currently directs the museum.

The museum's holdings encompass a wide range of materials by and related to Joaquín Torres García, including paintings, drawings, original writings, thousands of manuscript pages, sketches, drawn books, and furniture designed by the artist. The collection also preserves photographs, magazines, and publications connected to his life and work. Beyond Torres García's own output, the museum exhibits works by artists linked to his workshop and artistic influence, such as José Gurvich and Augusto Torres. The institution also hosts temporary exhibitions, such as a 2009 retrospective for ceramicist Eva Díaz Torres.

The permanent collection highlights distinct phases of Torres García's artistic evolution across its first three exhibition floors. The first floor, designated Clásico, features his modern classicism, centering on human archetypes like the laborer, the musician, the mother, and the elder through austere lines and geometry inspired by Greek art. The second floor, Moderno, covers his 1916 assimilation of modern art transformations and his time in New York, displaying his fractured, urban-themed compositions alongside his wooden toys, sculptures, collages, murals, and stencils. The third floor, Universal, presents his mature constructivist phase, where elements function as cultural symbols pointing to a secular, universal human spirituality. The collection also includes his unusual portraits of historical icons such as Beethoven and Mozart, and his cubist paintings akin to those of Picasso.

Since 1990, the museum has occupied a five-story Art Deco building at Sarandí 683, a pedestrian street in the Ciudad Vieja district. The site historically housed the Casa Broqua & Scholberg, a prominent bazaar during Montevideo's golden era. The building contains seven floors, with the first three dedicated to the permanent exhibition space organized by artistic period. The ground floor functions as a temporary library, while the basement serves as a theater. The upper floors are allocated for educational activities and art workshops.
