Museum of Fine Arts Ghent (MSK)

The museum building is located at Fernand Scribedreef 1 in the Citadelpark. Designed by city architect Charles van Rysselberghe, the brother of neo-impressionist painter Théo van Rysselberghe, it was constructed between 1900 and 1904 as a neoclassical art temple characterized by spaciousness and abundant light. The building was expanded to double its size for the 1913 World Exhibition, also under van Rysselberghe's direction. During World War I, the structure was used by the German medical corps and suffered severe damage. Before World War II, the collection was safely evacuated to Pau in southern France, though the building again sustained heavy war damage, becoming a ruin that was only fully renovated and reopened in 1951. The building received monument protection status in 1966. A major renovation took place between 2003 and 2007, after which the museum reopened. A museum square designed by Wim Goes and Aldrik Heirman connects the MSK with the adjacent SMAK.
