Museum of Modern Art

The Museum of Modern Art (Slovene: Moderna galerija) in Ljubljana, Slovenia, is the central museum and gallery of Slovenian art from the 20th and 21st centuries. Founded in 1947 and opened to the public in January 1948, it serves as the nation's primary institution for modern and contemporary art, functioning simultaneously as a venue for debate, documentation, education, research, and study. Since 2011, the museum has expanded to include a second site, the Museum of Contemporary Art Metelkova (MSUM), broadening its scope to present and research contemporary works.

The museum was established by decree of the government of the People's Republic of Slovenia on 30 December 1947, and officially opened to the public on 3 January 1948. Its creation marked a deliberate institutional division of labour with the National Gallery of Slovenia: the National Gallery retained responsibility for art from the Middle Ages through the early 20th century, including Impressionist and early modern works, while the Museum of Modern Art received the more recent collections. This arrangement defined the chronological boundaries that still shape Slovenian national museum collections. On 26 November 2011, the museum expanded with the addition of the Museum of Contemporary Art Metelkova, located on Metelkova Street in rehabilitated former army barracks, creating a dedicated venue for contemporary art production and research.

The museum holds the national collection of Slovenian art from the 20th and 21st centuries, encompassing paintings, sculptures, prints, and drawings, as well as photography, video, and electronic media. Beyond Slovenian works, the collections include art from the other former republics of Yugoslavia. The institution does not treat its holdings as strictly separated domains; instead, it dynamically combines and connects them across historical and contemporary boundaries. The collection traces the fundamental stages in the development of Slovenian modern and contemporary artistic traditions from the beginning of the 20th century onward. The museum also maintains a permanent collection of 21st-century Slovenian art alongside works by foreign artists.

Among the works in the permanent collection is the painting Lacemaker (Portrait of Štefka Batič), a signature piece that represents the museum's holdings in modern Slovenian art. The broader collections document the evolution of Slovenian visual culture across multiple media, from traditional painting and sculpture to time-based and digital works. The museum's holdings from the former Yugoslavia provide additional context for understanding regional artistic developments during the 20th century.

The museum's central building stands on Cankarjeva cesta in Ljubljana's Center district, at the western edge of Tivoli Park. Designed by Slovenian architect Edvard Ravnikar and completed in 1948, it represents an early work by a disciple of Jože Plečnik. The structure retains classical principles from Ravnikar's teacher: it is axially symmetrical with a raised central section that originally housed the main exhibition hall, with additional galleries of varying sizes in the two side wings. The main entrance, located on the piano nobile, is emphasised by a broad staircase covered by a monumental canopy. The facade is clad in stone slabs of varying finish, with windows set into the facade plane and framed in artifical stone; stone columns dividing the central window openings reinforce the building's monumental character. Together with the Primož Trubar monument by sculptor Franc Berneker, the museum building forms an entrance to Tivoli Park.

The Museum of Modern Art is located at 15 Cankarjeva cesta, near Tivoli Park in central Ljubljana. It operates as a public institution under national ownership, with its official website at https://www.mg-lj.si/. The museum is accessible at its original site on Cankarjeva cesta and, since 2011, at the second location on Metelkova Street. It also serves as one of the venues for the International Biennial of Graphic Arts. The institution continues to pursue an open, divergent museum model, seeking dialogue with comparable institutions and those developing new cultural production models.
