Museum of Montserrat

The Museum of Montserrat is an art and archaeological museum located at the thousand-year-old Abbey of Montserrat in Monistrol de Montserrat, Catalonia, Spain. Founded in 1911 as the Biblical Museum of Montserrat, it houses more than 1,300 works across six distinct collections spanning from ancient Egyptian antiquities to contemporary art. Declared a museum of national interest by the Parliament of Catalonia in 2006, it is regarded as one of the most important yet least known museums in Catalonia, serving as both a guardian of Benedictine heritage and a dynamic cultural institution.

The museum originated from the Biblical Museum of Montserrat, inaugurated on 27 April 1911 through the efforts of Dom Bonaventura Ubach (1879-1960), a Benedictine monk who spent extended periods in Jerusalem and Beirut from 1906 onward. Ubach gathered archaeological, ethnological, zoological, and botanical materials from the Holy Land, Egypt, Syria, and Iraq to illustrate the biblical world. The collection was expanded in 1923 and 1927. The modern Museum of Montserrat proper emerged in 1963, built around these archaeological holdings and Renaissance and Baroque paintings already present in the monastery. A pivotal moment came in 1982 with the major donation of Josep Sala Ardiz, which significantly enriched the museum with nineteenth- and twentieth-century Catalan and Spanish painting. Subsequent bequests included that of architect Xavier Busquets in 1990, bringing French Impressionist works, and contributions from the Cusí family, including an important early Salvador Dalí. The museum acquired additional spaces for temporary exhibitions and reserves during the 2004 renovation of the sanctuary squares. Josep de C. Laplana, an art historian and Benedictine member, serves as director.

The museum's six collections encompass an exceptionally wide chronological and geographical range. The Archaeology of the Biblical East Collection contains objects from Mesopotamia, Egypt, Greece, the Holy Land, and Cyprus, including an Egyptian sarcophagus from the 13th century BC that is the oldest piece in the museum. The Goldsmithery collection comprises liturgical objects from the 15th to the 20th century. Painting from the 13th to the 18th century includes Spanish, Italian, and Flemish masters. The 19th and 20th century Painting section holds one of the finest collections of Catalan painting alongside French Impressionist works and graphic art by major contemporary figures. Since 2006, the museum has housed the Phos Hilaron collection of approximately 160 Byzantine and Slavic icons, displayed in an environment evoking an oriental church. An exhibition devoted to the Iconography of Our Lady of Montserrat traces the Virgin's representation across centuries. The museum also holds papyri from the Fundacio Roca-puig and a collection of Coptic textiles.

Among the museum's most celebrated works is an internationally renowned painting of Saint Jerome attributed to Caravaggio. The early painting collection also features works by Pedro Berruguete, El Greco, Luca Giordano, and Giovanni Battista Tiepolo. The Catalan and Spanish modern collections include Mariano Fortuny's The Tapestry Seller, Santiago Rusiñol, Ramón Casas, Isidre Nonell, Joaquim Mir, Hermen Anglada Camarasa, Pablo Picasso, and Salvador Dalí. The French Impressionist holdings, noted as unusual for the Iberian Peninsula, include paintings by Claude Monet, Alfred Sisley, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, and Camille Pissarro, plus drawings, watercolors, and pastels by John Singer Sargent and Edgar Degas. The graphic and contemporary collections encompass Marc Chagall, Georges Braque, Le Corbusier, Jean Metzinger, Serge Poliakoff, Juan Gris, Georges Rouault, Joan Miró, Antoni Clavé, and Antoni Tàpies. The most recent addition to the chronological span is a painting by Sean Scully from 2010.

The museum is situated within the Monasterio de Montserrat, a Benedictine cenobium founded in 1025 by Abbot Oliva, which still houses an active community of Benedictine monks. The museum occupies spaces integrated into this millennium-old monastic complex in the Montserrat mountain range. In 2004, the renovation of the sanctuary squares allowed the museum to gain new spaces for temporary exhibitions and reserves. A dedicated Sean Scully art space was opened at Santa Cecilia in Montserrat in 2015. The museum's exhibition programming includes the Pere Daura Room and the Pere Pruna Art Space, which host continuous temporary exhibitions.

The Museum of Montserrat is located in Monistrol de Montserrat, in the Catalunya Central region of Spain. It operates as an institution of the Monastery of Montserrat, with the website www.museudemontserrat.com. The museum maintains an active exhibition policy, with only a small portion of its collection on permanent display and temporary exhibitions rotating continuously. It has lent works to exhibitions in Madrid (2008), Valencia, Murcia, Paris, and La Coruña, among other cities.
