Overview
The National Archaeological Museum of Korçë (Albanian: Muzeu Arkeologjik i Korçës) is an archaeological museum located in the city of Korçë, Albania. Established in 1985, the institution is particularly distinguished for its focus on regional prehistory. It holds approximately 1,200 artifacts, the majority of which date to the Prehistoric period, ranging from the Neolithic era to the Middle Ages. The museum provides a comprehensive overview of early human settlement in the Korçë district through everyday objects, tools, and ornaments.
Founding & history
The museum was established in 1985 and subsequently underwent a reorganization and expansion in 1990. The historic structure housing the collection suffered damage during the 2019 Albania earthquake, which also affected some of the exhibits. Prior to this, partial roof restoration took place in 2009. In July 2024, a more comprehensive restoration project commenced to reinforce the building foundations, restore the masonry and wooden beams, and entirely restore the roof. This six-month project aimed to secure the earthquake-damaged structure and preserve its architectural integrity.
Collection scope
The collection encompasses approximately 1,200 exhibits distributed across several galleries. It draws primarily from archaeological sites near Korçë, with a strong emphasis on regional prehistory. The holdings span the Neolithic period (6000-2100 BC), featuring artifacts from settlements such as Podgori, Maliq, and Dunavec. Bronze Age (2100-1100 BC) materials originate from sites including Sovjan, Barç, and Rehovë, while Iron Age (1100-500 BC) items are also represented. The chronological scope extends into the Middle Ages. The collection features pottery, jewelry, sculptures, tools, and burials, highlighting the everyday life and material culture of these successive periods.
Notable holdings
Among the most significant holdings is the skeleton of a pregnant Illyrian woman, excavated from the Kamenica Tumulus burial site. This site, which is a major source of artifacts for the museum, contained approximately 400 burials. The inclusion of this skeleton provides direct physical evidence of the Illyrian population in the region, complementing the broader collection of pottery, jewelry, and burial goods recovered from the area.
Building & site
The museum is housed in two traditional Korça houses located at 19 Rruga Mihal Grameno. The structures date to 1870 and belong to the Ottoman period. Recognized for their historical and architectural significance, the buildings are listed as a Cultural Monument of Albania. The architectural features of the houses, including their masonry and wooden beams, have necessitated ongoing conservation efforts to maintain the site against natural wear and seismic damage.
