Neue Galerie

The Neue Galerie New York is a museum dedicated to early twentieth-century German and Austrian art and design. Located on the Upper East Side of Manhattan at the corner of Fifth Avenue and 86th Street, it occupies a prominent place on New York City's Museum Mile. The institution opened on November 16, 2001, and holds the most significant collection of twentieth-century Austrian and German modernism outside of Europe. In May 2026, the museum and the Metropolitan Museum of Art announced a landmark agreement to merge in 2028, which will bring the Neue Galerie's distinguished collection under the Met's umbrella while preserving its unique museum experience.

The museum is housed in the former William Starr Miller House, a six-story Louis XIII or Beaux-Arts style structure located at 1048 Fifth Avenue. The building was commissioned by industrialist William Starr Miller II and completed in 1914 by the architectural firm Carriere and Hastings, who also designed the New York Public Library. It was later occupied by Grace Vanderbilt, the widow of Cornelius Vanderbilt III, before serving as the New York branch of the YIVO Institute. The New York Landmarks Commission has designated the structure, which is widely considered one of the most beautiful edifices on Fifth Avenue. Following its purchase in 1994, Selldorf Architects, led by Annabelle Selldorf, executed a complete renovation and conversion of the building into a museum, which provides 4,300 square feet of exhibition space and has a maximum occupancy of 375 people. The interiors reflect the aesthetics of the Wiener Werkstatte, featuring designer furniture, spiral staircases, and black-and-white marble floors. Beyond the galleries, the facility contains a bookstore, a design shop, and two Viennese cafes: Cafe Sabarsky and Cafe Fledermaus. Cafe Sabarsky, named for the co-founder, draws inspiration from early twentieth-century Viennese cafes and is outfitted with period objects, including lighting fixtures by Josef Hoffmann, furniture by Adolf Loos, banquettes upholstered with a 1912 Otto Wagner fabric, and a Bosendorfer grand piano used for cabaret and classical performances.

The Neue Galerie is located on the Upper East Side of Manhattan at the intersection of Fifth Avenue and 86th Street, situated approximately equidistant between the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum and the Metropolitan Museum of Art along the Museum Mile. The institution is led by President and founder Ronald S. Lauder, an advisory Board of Trustees, and Director Renee Price. In addition to its permanent collection, the museum hosts major temporary exhibitions, such as Egon Schiele: Living Landscapes and German Masterworks from the Neue Galerie. The museum's design shop and bookstore offer specialized items, including jewelry recreating Wiener Werkstatte designs, art-inspired cosmetics, and publications on Austrian and German art and literature. The museum is scheduled to close on May 27, 2026, for major renovations, reopening in the autumn for its 25th anniversary before fully merging with the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 2028. Upon the merger, the building will continue to house the collection, programming, and Cafe Sabarsky, operating as a branch of the Met under the name Met Ronald S. Lauder Neue Galerie.
