Palais Mamming Museum

The Palais Mamming Museum is the city museum of Merano, South Tyrol, Italy. Since 2015, it has housed the collections of the Merano City Museum in a restored Baroque palace on Pfarrplatz. The museum is the oldest in Alto Adige and holds approximately 100,000 objects, with particular strengths in regional history, art, and curiosities donated by citizens and visitors. The building itself, originally known as Steinachheim and later as Palais Desfours, has been protected as a historic monument since 1951.

The museum's origins trace to 1899, when the Meraner Museumsverein was founded. The following year, the museum opened in the Glallhäusl on what is now the Winterpromenade, with physician Franz Innerhofer as its first director. Innerhofer invested much of his personal fortune in the institution. Space constraints forced a relocation in 1911 to Jahnstraße (today Galileistraße 43). After that building closed in 1989, a portion of the collection was displayed from 1998 at the "Roter Adler" on Rennweg. In 1991, the municipality of Merano purchased Palais Mamming with the intention of renovating it for the city museum. The restored palace opened as the Palais Mamming Museum in April 2015.

The museum's holdings comprise roughly 100,000 objects spanning from prehistory to modern art, supplemented by a Tirolensien library of 30,000 volumes. The permanent exhibition is organized into 27 departments presenting aspects of Meranese and Tyrolean history. The collection developed significantly through donations from local citizens and spa visitors, resulting in an eclectic mix of regional artifacts and international curiosities. The art collection includes works by Friedrich Wasmann and Leo Putz.

Among the museum's most distinctive items are an Egyptian mummy, a death mask of Napoleon, and a Sudanese weapons collection from the estate of Slatin Pascha. These objects reflect the museum's unusual history of acquisitions through the generosity of its patrons and visitors.

Palais Mamming is a Baroque palace constructed around 1675 by Karl Delai for the Barons von Mamming, a merchant family resident in Merano since the early 14th century that ranked among the wealthiest and most influential noble houses of the Burggrafenamt. The family was elevated to baronial rank in 1672 and to comital status in 1693. The original name of the estate was Steinachheim; the alternative name Palais Desfours came into use from the 19th century after Adelheid Gräfin von Desfours purchased the property in 1844 following its sale by Franz Graf von Mamming in the 1830s for financial reasons. The building has stood under monument protection since 1951 and is located on Pfarrplatz in Merano's upper cathedral square.
