Pinacoteca Domenico Inzaghi, Budrio

The Pinacoteca Domenico Inzaghi is an art museum located in Budrio, within the Metropolitan City of Bologna, Italy. It holds a specialized collection of primarily Emilian paintings, drawings, and prints spanning from the 14th to the 19th century. The institution is significant for its origins in private patronage and its deep connection to local agrarian and civic history, housing works by prominent Bolognese and Emilian masters alongside pieces reflecting the area's cultural heritage.

The collection originated from the bequest of Captain Domenico Inzaghi, a notable local political and cultural figure, playwright, and art collector. In his will, dated 1821, Inzaghi left his entire picture gallery, comprising 228 pieces including drawings and prints, to the agrarian collective La Partecipanza and the municipality, stipulating that the collection be opened to the public and housed in the Palazzo della Partecipanza. The pinacoteca was officially inaugurated on November 9, 1931, organized and curated by Antonio Certani, a prominent figure in the music world and a refined collector of Bolognese and Emilian drawings. The following month, a royal decree dissolved the Partecipanza consortium, transferring all its assets, including the art collection, to the Commune of Budrio, at which point it became known as the Pinacoteca Civica Inzaghi. Between 1988 and 1989, the museum underwent a restructuring, and the collection was augmented with paintings from the Opera Pia Bianchi and the Fondazione Benni di Bologna, as well as the acquisition of the important Fondo Majani and donations from contemporary painters.

The collection provides a broad survey of Bolognese and Emilian painting from the 14th to the 18th centuries, supplemented by 19th-century works. It features 16th-century artists from Venetian, Lombard, and Flemish circles, as well as pieces by lesser-known masters active in peripheral areas or working in the styles of celebrated caposcuola. The works are arranged chronologically and typologically across eight rooms, beginning with works tied to the history of Budrio, followed by primitives and 16th-century paintings. Subsequent rooms are dedicated to sacred and mythological subjects, 17th- and 18th-century portraits, landscapes, still lifes, and genre scenes from the same period, concluding with works from the 17th to the 19th centuries sourced from local charitable organizations and sacred buildings. Beyond paintings, the museum holds a substantial collection of prints and drawings, including engravings by Albrecht Durer and the Carracci, and drawings by Guercino, Vittorio Bigari, and Donato Creti.

Notable paintings in the collection include works by Vitale da Bologna, Simone dei Crocefissi, Dosso Dossi, Battista Dossi, Bartolomeo Passerotti, Prospero Fontana, Lavinia Fontana, Denis Calvaert, Alessandro Tiarini, Giovanni Andrea Donducci (il Mastelletta), and Giuseppe Maria Crespi. The gallery also holds works by or influenced by Cima da Conegliano, Francesco Francia, Ludovico Carracci, Francesco Brizio, Guercino, and Guido Reni. Additional painters in the collection include Cesare Gennari, Antonio Mezzadri, Felice Rubbiani, Simon Vouet, Tommaso Garelli, Cristoforo di Benedetto, Mauro Gandolfi, Antonio Ghedini, and Alessandro Guardassoni. The print collection features engravings by Francesco Curti, Vittorio Maria Bigari, Jacques Callot, and Antonio Sarti.

The museum is situated on the first floor of the historic Palazzo della Partecipanza at Via Mentana 32 (also listed as 36) in Budrio. The palazzo is a living symbol of the centuries-old Partecipanza agrarian institution, which organized collective labor and governed communal agrarian assets until the Napoleonic era. The building also houses the historic Teatro Consorziale. A separate branch of the museum is located inside the Risorgimento Tower, which displays a cross-section of Budrio's 19th-century history. Due to its location on the first floor of a historic building, the museum is unfortunately not accessible to visitors with motor disabilities.

The Pinacoteca Civica Domenico Inzaghi reopened to the public in April 2022 following a three-year closure, featuring new lighting, repainted environments, and a new exhibition path. It is owned and operated by the Commune of Budrio. The museum is open to the public on the third Sunday of each month from 10:00 to 13:00 and 14:00 to 17:00. Visits can also be arranged by appointment through the local Culture Office, which can be contacted via email or telephone. The average visit duration is approximately one hour.
