Randers Museum of Art

Randers Museum of Art (Danish: Randers Kunstmuseum) is a Danish art museum located in Randers in northeastern Jutland, Denmark. Founded in 1887, it is one of the country's established institutions for Danish art, with a particular concentration on works from the 19th and 20th centuries. The museum holds a collection of over 4,000 paintings and is situated in the cultural centre of Kulturhuset (The House of Culture) in the town centre, where it presents major works by leading Danish painters and hosts approximately four exhibitions of Danish artists annually.

The museum was founded in 1887, making it one of the longer-established art museums in Denmark. For decades it developed its collection of Danish art, spanning from 1790 to the present. In 1969, the museum moved into its current premises in Kulturhuset, a cultural centre designed by architect Flemming Lassen. In February 2009, the Danish architectural firm 3XN won a competition to design new premises for the museum. The proposed building, intended as a transition between town and countryside, art and nature, would have covered 7,550 square metres (81,300 square feet) and included three exhibition galleries, an auditorium, a café and a shop. However, efforts to raise approximately DKK 250 million for the project proved unsuccessful, and in September 2012 the ambitious new-build scheme was abandoned. Consideration was then given to extending the existing building instead.

The museum's collection is devoted primarily to Danish art, with works ranging from 1790 to the contemporary period. Its holdings are especially strong in two areas: the Golden Age of Danish Painting, and Danish Naturalism from the late 19th century. The collection also encompasses early Modernism and Surrealism, as well as contemporary art from the 1970s onward. With over 4,000 paintings, the museum offers a substantial survey of Danish artistic production across more than two centuries.

The Golden Age of Danish Painting is represented by works by Christen Købke, Nicolai Abildgaard, Jens Juel, Christoffer Wilhelm Eckersberg, Wilhelm Marstrand, Johan Lundbye, P. C. Skovgaard and Vilhelm Kyhn. Danish Naturalism from the end of the 19th century includes masterpieces by L.A. Ring, Theodor Philipsen, Vilhelm Hammershøi, Agnes Slott-Møller and Jens Ferdinand Willumsen. Early Modernism and Surrealism are represented by Harald Giersing, Edvard Weie, William Scharff, Karl Isakson, Jais Nielsen, Wilhelm Freddie and Vilhelm Bjerke-Petersen. Twentieth-century artists in the collection include Vilhelm Lundstrøm, Wilhelm Freddie and Asger Jorn. Contemporary painters from the 1970s onward include Kurt Trampedach, Anders Kierkegaard, Hans Christian Rylander, Henrik Ipsen, Jørgen Haugen Sørensen, Claus Carstensen, Erik A. Frandsen, Berit Jensen, Søren Dahlgaard and Peter Carlsen.

The museum occupies space within Kulturhuset (The House of Culture) in the centre of Randers. This cultural centre was designed by architect Flemming Lassen and opened in 1969. The building places the museum in a central urban position, integrated into a broader cultural complex rather than standing as a separate purpose-built institution. The abandoned 2009 proposal by 3XN had envisioned a very different relationship between building and landscape, designed as a deliberate transition between town and countryside, art and nature.

Randers Museum of Art is located at Stemannsgade 2, 2, Randers. The museum is open to visitors free of charge from 10 am to 4 pm, Tuesday to Sunday, with extended hours until 8 pm on the last Wednesday of each month.
