Sabadell Art Museum

The Sabadell Art Museum, known in Catalan as the Museu d'Art de Sabadell and commonly abbreviated as MAS, is a museum devoted to Catalan painting of the 19th and 20th centuries. Located in Sabadell, the capital of El Vallès Occidental in Spain, it forms part of the Barcelona Provincial Council Local Museum Network. The institution occupies a historic 19th-century house-factory that preserves the atmosphere of the city's industrial era, offering visitors insight into both the region's artistic heritage and its bourgeois domestic architecture.

The museum was established on 30 May 1980. Its home, the Casa Turull, was constructed between 1812 and 1819 as the residence of Pere Turull i Sallent, a prominent textile industrialist and co-founder of the Caixa d'Estalvis de Sabadell savings bank. The building's interior was notably luxurious, reflecting reforms carried out in 1860 for the visit of Queen Isabella II, who stayed overnight there. The Sabadell Town Council purchased the property in 1964. Extensive remodelling took place between 1993 and 1997 to adapt the space for its current museum function while preserving its historic character.

The museum's collection focuses primarily on Catalan painting from the 19th and 20th centuries, with particular strength in artists connected to Sabadell and its surrounding region. The holdings span from 19th-century academic painters through well into the 20th century, tracing the evolution of local artistic production across two centuries. The collection emphasizes authors with direct ties to the city, reflecting Sabadell's significance as an industrial and cultural centre within Catalonia.

Among the represented artists are figures such as Antoni Estruch, associated with 19th-century academicism, and later painters including Marian Burguès, Rafael Durancamps, Josep Espinalt, Joan Figueras, Ramon Quer, and Narcís Giralt i Sallarès. The 20th century is represented by names such as Joan Vila i Cinca, his son Antoni Vila Arrufat, Joan Vila Puig, and Joan Vilatobà. These works collectively illustrate the development of Catalan painting through successive generations of artists linked to the Sabadell area.

The museum occupies the Casa Turull, a bourgeois house-factory typical of 19th-century Sabadell. The structure is divided into two parts: the family residence and an adjoining building that housed the textile factory. Visitors can tour both the public and private rooms of the house, which retain their period furnishings and decoration, all presented within the context of the city's industrialization. The building's luxurious interior, enhanced by the 1860 reforms for Queen Isabella II's visit, provides a rare surviving example of the domestic architecture of Sabadell's industrial elite.
