Sherbrooke Museum of Fine Arts

The Sherbrooke Museum of Fine Arts (French: Musée des beaux-arts de Sherbrooke) is the principal art museum in Sherbrooke, Quebec, Canada, and the main institution in the Estrie region for the display and conservation of art. Founded in 1982 by local art enthusiasts, it holds a collection of more than 5,500 works and occupies a prominent position at 241 Dufferin Street in downtown Sherbrooke. The museum receives funding from the City of Sherbrooke, the Quebec Ministry of Culture and Communications, and its members. It was accredited by the Quebec Ministry of Culture and Communications in March 1990.

The museum was established in 1982 by local art lovers with the purpose of promoting art by artists from the Eastern Townships or inspired by that region. Following its founding, it gained official recognition through accreditation by the Quebec Ministry of Culture and Communications in March 1990. In 1996, the institution relocated to the former head office of the Eastern Townships Bank, a building originally constructed between 1874 and 1876 according to designs by Montreal architect James Nelson in the Second Empire style. The building was completely renovated for museum use. In 2025, the organization announced plans to move to new premises that will be built on Rue des Abénaquis, with construction expected to be completed in approximately seven years.

The collections are composed primarily of works by Quebecois and Canadian artists, along with American, European, and Indigenous artists. All historical periods are represented: art before 1880, modern art from 1880 to 1945, and contemporary art from 1945 onward. The holdings span fine arts in the broad sense, including visual arts, media arts, decorative arts, craft, architecture, and design. The collection now numbers more than 5,500 works by over 950 artists. Approximately half of these works are certified as cultural property by the Canadian Cultural Property Export Review Board. The works are essentially acquired through donation. Among the holdings are roughly 430 photographic works, about 1,150 paintings, and approximately 600 sculptures.

Since 1996, the museum has been housed in the former head office of the Eastern Townships Bank at 241 Dufferin Street in downtown Sherbrooke. The building was designed by Montreal architect James Nelson and constructed between 1874 and 1876 in the Second Empire style. The structure was fully renovated to accommodate museum functions. The museum's three exhibition rooms are distributed across three floors of this historic building. The institution is preparing for a future relocation to new premises on Rue des Abénaquis, with an anticipated completion date approximately seven years from the 2025 announcement.
