Skovgaard Museum

The Skovgaard Museum is an art museum in Viborg, Denmark, dedicated to four generations of the Skovgaard family of artists. Founded in 1937, it occupies the former town hall from 1728, situated next to Viborg Cathedral on Domkirkestræde 2-4. The museum matters as the principal repository of works spanning Danish art from the Golden Age through Symbolism and early Modernism, centered on a family whose members shaped national landscape painting, cathedral decoration, and applied arts.

The museum was established in 1937, originally conceived by the Viborg city council to honor Joakim Frederik Skovgaard and document his creation of the fresco and ceiling paintings in Viborg Cathedral between 1901 and 1913. These decorations cover approximately 2,000 square meters of wall and ceiling surfaces with scenes from the Old and New Testaments. Joakim Skovgaard imposed a condition: the museum must be dedicated to the entire family, including his father P. C. Skovgaard, his mother Georgia, and his siblings Niels Kristian and Susette Cathrine, all of whom were artistically active. He further insisted that artists who had assisted in the cathedral decoration also be represented. In exchange, the Skovgaard family donated their art collection to form the museum's foundation. The permanent collection centers on the Skovgaard family across four generations, beginning with P. C. Skovgaard's national romantic landscapes from the Danish Golden Age. It encompasses works by his three children, featuring landscapes alongside religious subjects, folk wisdom, and Nordic mythology. The collection extends to subsequent generations of the family and includes painting, drawing, graphic works, ceramics, and an applied arts collection from around 1900. Beyond the family, the museum holds works by associates and contemporaries including Thorvald Bindesbøll, Herman Wilhelm Bissen, H. A. Brendekilde, Janus la Cour, Hermann Ernst Freund, Lorenz Frølich, Constantin Hansen, Christen Købke, Christian August Lorentzen, Johan Thomas Lundbye, Harald Slott-Møller, and Frederik Vermehren. The cathedral assistants are represented by Niels Larsen Stevns, Arne Lofthus, Viggo Pedersen, and Povl Jer Blow. The museum presents three to four temporary exhibitions annually, ranging from early nineteenth-century art to contemporary work, while the permanent collection remains on display year-round.

The museum is housed in Viborg's former town hall, constructed in 1728 by Claus Stallknecht, a master builder from Altona. The building stands at Domkirkestræde 2-4, immediately adjacent to Viborg Cathedral. This location places the museum in direct proximity to the site of Joakim Skovgaard's major artistic achievement, the cathedral frescoes that prompted the museum's founding.
