Städtische Galerie im Park Viersen

The Städtische Galerie im Park Viersen is the municipal art gallery of Viersen, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. Established in 1981, the institution is situated in a historic villa surrounded by a park of mature trees that also houses the Viersen sculpture collection. The gallery serves as a venue for temporary exhibitions and cultural events, drawing visitors from the lower Rhine region and the Netherlands. It manages the city's substantial graphic collection and places a strong programmatic emphasis on art in public space, closely linking its indoor exhibitions with the outdoor sculptures on the surrounding grounds.

The gallery's graphic collection predates the institution itself, having been initiated in the early 1960s by Karl-Heinz van Kaldenkerken, then the city's chief administrative director. The city acquired the villa in 1973, and it was listed as a historic monument in 1976. Following a moderate remodeling in 1980 to accommodate museum use, the building opened as the Städtische Galerie im Park in 1981. Its inaugural exhibition that year featured works by the realist painter Dieter Asmus. Over the following decades, the gallery hosted significant exhibitions accompanied by special publications for artists such as Henry Moore in 1989, Tony Cragg in 1996, and Wang Du in 2010.

The core of the gallery's holdings is the Graphische Sammlung der Stadt Viersen, comprising over 1000 works on paper from the late 15th century to the present. Due to the light-sensitivity of these works, a permanent display is not possible for conservation reasons, meaning the gallery exclusively mounts temporary exhibitions drawn from its own collection alongside loans. The collection encompasses old master prints, modern graphic works, a dedicated grouping of Rhenish artists, and contemporary art acquired in conjunction with gallery exhibitions. Additionally, 40 photographs by the renowned Rhenish photographer August Sander are part of the holdings.

The graphic collection features precious individual sheets by old masters including Rembrandt, Rubens, and Albrecht Dürer. Modern and contemporary highlights include works by Marc Chagall, Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque, Fernand Léger, Joan Miró, Otto Dix, and Andy Warhol. The collection also holds graphic works by German Expressionists such as Lyonel Feininger, Oskar Kokoschka, Paul Klee, and Emil Nolde. The surrounding sculpture park, initiated by the Viersen Heimatverein, features works by prominent contemporary sculptors including Tony Cragg, Erwin Heerich, Roberto Matta, Mark di Suvero, and Wang Du.

The gallery is housed in a villa constructed in 1868 or 1869 by the architect Friedrich Wilhelm Scheidt as a representative manufacturer's residence in the Neo-Renaissance style. Its first resident, Kommerzienrat Gustav Adolf Schmidt, significantly shaped the property by adding a garden room, a romantic garden, and new facade ornaments. The building later became part of the Kaiser's Kaffee headquarters complex. Surviving both world wars without damage, the villa eventually passed to the city. Today, the building provides 265 square meters of exhibition space across seven rooms on two levels. It sits centrally in Viersen, situated between the district administration building and the central bus station, surrounded by a park that serves as a green oasis in the urban center.

The Städtische Galerie im Park is located at Rathauspark 1, 41747 Viersen, and is owned by the city. It presents six to seven temporary exhibitions annually, with a focus on modern realist trends, Rhenish art, and public art. Admission to the gallery is free. Opening hours apply only during active exhibitions: Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday from 15:00 to 18:00, Thursday from 15:00 to 20:00, and Sundays and holidays from 11:00 to 18:00. The surrounding sculpture park remains open year-round. The gallery offers educational programs, including guided tours for schools and groups, and specialized events such as a monthly lunchtime tour and programs for visitors with dementia. It also supports emerging artists through the Peters-Messer Stipendium, which funds young creators working on paper.
