In 1958, the religious order sold the land to a real estate developer who planned to build a high rise apartment building on the site. To prevent the demolition of the historic house, neighboring philanthropists Walter and May Beatrice Stewart purchased the property and subsequently donated it to the City of Pointe-Claire for a symbolic fee of one dollar, stipulating that the site be preserved and dedicated to cultural activities. The city then commissioned the architectural firm Papineau, Gerin-Lajoie, and Leblanc to adapt the residence into a public facility. The cultural centre was officially inaugurated on February 16, 1963, in the presence of Governor General Georges Vanier.

The Stewart Hall Art Gallery, located on the third floor of the mansion, was founded alongside the cultural centre in 1963. The gallery holds a permanent collection of approximately 250 works encompassing both local and international artists. Its programming emphasizes contemporary exhibitions, and it provides an art rental and sales service to the public.
