Swiss Architecture Museum

The S AM Swiss Architecture Museum (German: S AM Schweizerisches Architekturmuseum; French: Musée Suisse d'Architecture; Italian: Museo svizzero di architettura) is Switzerland's leading institution for the communication of contemporary architecture. In 2004, the museum relocated to the Kunsthalle Basel. Two years later, in 2006, it was renamed "S AM Schweizerisches Architekturmuseum," a change that formalized its expanded mandate to present the architectural history and development of Switzerland as a whole. Subsequent directors have included Francesca Ferguson (2006-2009), Hubertus Adam (2013-2015), Andreas Ruby (2016-2026), and Adam Szymczyk, who assumed the directorship in 2026.

The S AM does not maintain a permanent collection in the traditional sense. Instead, its work centers on temporary exhibitions and an extensive program of accompanying events, including lectures, discussions, talks, workshops, and guided tours. The museum also produces publications tied to its exhibitions. Since its foundation, it has realized over 150 exhibitions, with some sources citing more than 170. Early exhibitions included Jean Prouvé (1984), Le Corbusier and Raoul La Roche (1987), and Frank O. Gehry (1989). The museum presented Herzog & de Meuron and the Office for Metropolitan Architecture in 1988, and later surveys of Rafael Moneo (1993), Zaha Hadid (2005), and Richard Neutra (2010). More recent programming has addressed broader themes: "City Inc." (2012), "The Object of Zionism" (2011), "Balkanology" (2008), and "Basel 2050" (2020). The 2022 exhibition "Napoli Super Modern" and 2023's "Homo Urbanus, A Citymatographic Odyssey by Bêka & Lemoine" demonstrate the museum's continued engagement with contemporary urban questions. Other notable thematic shows include "Dichtelust, Forms of Urban Coexistence in Switzerland" (2018), "Bengal Stream" (2017), and "Was wäre wenn, Ungebaute Architektur in der Schweiz" (2024), the latter examining unbuilt architecture in Switzerland.

The museum's current premises are located within the Kunsthalle Basel, a central cultural institution in Basel. This move in 2004 from its original location in the Domus-Haus represented a significant shift, placing the architecture museum within one of the city's foremost contemporary art venues. The earlier Domus-Haus site, built by Rasser and Vadi in 1958, had provided four floors of space and was notable as a surviving example of Basel's 1950s modern architecture.
